Northrop Grumman Brings 50mm to the Swarm Fight: Raid Hunter Revives Gun-Based Air Defence

Northrop Grumman has introduced Raid Hunter, a gun-based air defence system designed for high-volume, mixed aerial raids. The system is built around a 50mm chain gun firing precision-guided ammunition, and is aimed at cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems and drone swarms.
What the system offers
Raid Hunter uses a modular, palletised form factor that allows rapid deployment and C-130 transport, with vehicle-mounted and container-based variants planned. A networked, interoperable system controller lets it plug into different command and control architectures. Deep magazines and fast reload are the core of the design pitch: the ability to keep engaging successive waves rather than running dry after the first.
Kenn Todorov, vice president for Command and Control at Northrop Grumman, said the system “delivers rapid, high-capacity protection against complex, mass aerial threats” in a cost-effective way. The company says testing planned through the year will further validate performance and support accelerated fielding. Why guns are back
The issue is the cost exchange. Shooting down a few-thousand-dollar one-way attack drone with a several-hundred-thousand-dollar interceptor is an equation the defender loses economically even when it wins tactically. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Shahed waves over Ukraine made that arithmetic impossible to ignore.
Guns returned on that basis. A cannon firing guided rounds keeps cost per engagement far below missile levels while its magazine depth allows it to work through dozens of targets in a single raid. Choosing 50mm buys both a larger guided projectile and greater effective reach; the traditional 30mm and 35mm anti-aircraft calibres have largely reached their limits on both counts.
Where it fits in layered defence
Raid Hunter targets the gap between electronic warfare and short-range missiles. Jamming can fail against autonomous munitions that need neither satellite navigation nor a radio link, while close-in missiles are effective but expensive and shallow in stockpile. A gun fills the layer between them.
Türkiye’s position
Türkiye invested in gun-based air defence early. ASELSAN’s KORKUT applies exactly this logic with 35mm cannon and airburst smart ammunition, while systems such as GÜRZ and GÖKBERK represent the hybrid approach of combining gun, missile and laser effectors on a single platform.
The American move to 50mm raises two questions for Turkish industry: what a calibre increase costs in platform terms, and how quickly an indigenous guided cannon round can mature. With swarm attacks now routine, cost per engagement is no longer a technical footnote — it is a direct measure of deterrence.
