The World’s Most Expensive Fighter Jets (2026): We Compared the Unit Costs

Data period: FY2025 budget documents and Lot 18 contract awards.
There is no single correct answer to “what is the world’s most expensive fighter jet?” because the question hides a second one: which cost are we talking about? The same aircraft can be quoted at $82 million or $345 million depending on which line of a budget document you read. This file sets the metric first, then ranks.
Methodology: which number are we comparing?
Defence procurement produces at least four distinct figures that routinely get conflated in reporting:
| Cost type | What it covers | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|
| Flyaway cost | Airframe, engine, avionics — ready to fly | Comparing aircraft to aircraft |
| Weapon system cost | Flyaway plus spares and support equipment | Budget line procurement |
| APUC | Total procurement funding divided by quantity | Programme management |
| PAUC | Everything including R&D, divided by quantity | Total cost to the taxpayer |
Ranking: most expensive combat aircraft by flyaway unit cost

| 2 | F-15EX Eagle II | ABD | Weapon system (gross) | 113,1 | FY2025 | USAF P-1 budget exhibit | Flyaway subtotal approx. $103.2M |
| 3 | F-35B Lightning II | ABD | Flyaway | 109,0 | Lot 18 | F-35 JPO / Lockheed Martin | STOVL; lift-fan drives cost |
| 4 | F-35C Lightning II | ABD | Flyaway | 102,1 | Lot 18 | F-35 JPO / Lockheed Martin | Carrier variant |
| 5 | Rafale (French domestic) | Fransa | Flyaway approx. | 100,0 | 2024 | French MoD (LPM) | Excludes weapons and support |
| 6 | Eurofighter Typhoon T4 | Çok uluslu | Flyaway approx. | 95,0 | 2025 | Consortium range | No single published unit price; band |
| 7 | Gripen E | İsveç | Flyaway approx. | 90,0 | 2024 | FMV / Saab | Referenced to the Brazilian programme |
| 8 | F-35A Lightning II | ABD | Flyaway | 82,5 | Lot 18 | F-35 JPO / Lockheed Martin | Lot 18–19 average $82.1M |

Why the F-22 tops the table
Two reasons: quantity and generation. Fixed R&D, tooling and facility investment stayed put while the buy fell to roughly a quarter of the original plan. The result is the textbook case of the most important rule in defence economics: unit cost is usually set less by the aircraft than by how many you build.
The same rule runs in reverse for the F-35. Despite being among the most capable fifth-generation aircraft listed, the F-35A sits near the bottom at $82.5 million — the product of a production base measured in thousands and an operator community spread across some twenty nations.
Second table: export package value per aircraft
What a country pays is not what an aircraft costs. Procurement packages carry munitions, simulators, ground systems, training, spares and frequently ten years of sustainment. The table below divides package value by quantity — and it should not be read as an aircraft price.

| Deal | Parties | Per aircraft (US$ m) | Year | Package scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rafale M (India, 26) | Fransa→Hindistan | 288,0 | 2025 | $7.5bn package; 50% offset, munitions, simulators, sustainment |
| Eurofighter Typhoon (Türkiye, 20) | İngiltere→Türkiye | 350,0 | 2025 | £5.4bn (~$7bn); training, logistics and depot-level support included |
| Rafale (UAE, 80) | Fransa→BAE | 237,5 | 2021 | $19bn package |
| Rafale (Indonesia, 42) | Fransa→Endonezya | 192,9 | 2022 | $8.1bn package; narrower scope |
| Su-57E (Algeria, ~14) | Rusya→Cezayir | 143,0 | 2025 | Reported ~$2bn package — NOT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED |
Third table: programme cost including R&D
| System | Country | Cost type | US$ m | Data year | Source | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B-2 Spirit | ABD | PAUC | 2.130 | 1997 | GAO | 21 aircraft; bomber — separate category |
| B-21 Raider | ABD | APUC | 692 | 2022 BY | USAF | Bomber — separate category |
| F-22 Raptor | ABD | PAUC | 345 | 2011 | $67.3bn / 195 aircraft | R&D included |
Where Türkiye sits
Türkiye enters this file twice — once as a customer, once as a producer.
As a customer: Eurofighter Typhoon
Türkiye signed a £5.4 billion (roughly $7 billion) contract with the United Kingdom in 2025 for 20 Tranche 4 Eurofighter Typhoons. That works out to about $350 million per aircraft — one of the highest package figures in this file, and precisely the kind of number that should not be reported as a unit price. A technical and logistics support agreement signed in London in March 2026 made the scope explicit: maintenance, repair, training and depot-level capability transfer, including ten Turkish pilots and around 100 technical personnel trained in the UK. Deliveries begin in 2030.
As a producer: KAAN
Turkish Aerospace signed a formal contract with Indonesia in 2025 for 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighters, with deliveries to be completed within 120 months — the largest single export contract in the history of the Turkish defence industry.
Five drivers of combat aircraft cost
Production quantity
How many airframes absorb the fixed R&D and tooling investment? 195 for the F-22, thousands for the F-35. That single variable explains more of the spread than any other.
Low observability
Radar cross-section reduction shapes airframe geometry, coatings and the maintenance regime — raising both production and lifecycle cost.
The engine
The average F135 engine cost rose to roughly $20 million in F-35 Lot 18, up from $14–15 million in Lot 17. The engine line alone accounts for a substantial share of recent price growth.
Sensors and fusion
In a modern fighter, most of the cost sits in avionics and software rather than structure. Software block transitions become budget lines of their own.
Base year and inflation
Figures quoted in different base-year dollars are not directly comparable. A B-2 number in 1997 dollars and an F-15EX number in 2025 dollars are not on the same scale.
