Savronik exports: from the US to India and NATO
Show Article Summary

Quick answer: Savronik’s export record began in 2003 with intervalometers sold to Indonesia, followed by an intervalometer export to the United States in 2005. According to the company’s official history, the foreign portfolio now runs along two main tracks: defence electronics exports, and tunnel and railway infrastructure projects in India, Turkmenistan, Albania and Algeria. The company announced the BRASS Romania contract signed with NATO’s Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) in 2016 as the first major project contract signed between a Turkish firm and NATO.

The first exports: Indonesia and the United States

According to the entries in the official history, the company exported intervalometers to the Indonesian Air Force in 2003, and manufactured and exported intervalometers to the United States in 2005. An intervalometer is the fire control unit that governs the selection and firing of rockets from combat aircraft; the technical detail of the product is set out in the munitions electronics file. Selling components into a market with a defence industry as developed as that of the United States was a comparatively early export example for the Turkish defence sector of the 2000s; contract values have not been officially disclosed. Both sales show that the fire control electronics on which the company was founded found a buyer abroad.

The NATO BRASS Romania contract

The company’s history records the following entry for 2016: “The BRASS Romania Contract was signed with NATO-NCIA as the first contract signed by a Turkish company with NATO for a major project.” BRASS (Broadcast and Ship-Shore) is the programme renewing NATO’s HF communications infrastructure between coastal stations and ships, while the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) is the alliance’s procurement agency for communications and information systems. Because NATO agency tenders are open to competition, the contract can be read as an independent indicator of the company’s competence against alliance standards. The scope and value of the work package Savronik took on have not been officially disclosed; an image from the project ceremony appears in the company’s news archive. The company’s background in secure communications is summarised in the data link file.

India: the Atal Tunnel and railway work

The group’s Indian subsidiary, Savronik Sistem India, carried out the electromechanical and automation work of Indian Railways’ T-80 tunnel in 2012. Under a contract signed with the Border Roads Organisation in 2018, the electrical, electronic, electromechanical, automation and control systems of the roughly nine-kilometre Atal (Rohtang) Tunnel, at an altitude of 3,000 metres in the Himalayas, were completed on a turnkey basis. In a 2022 announcement the company reported that the project had entered the World Book of Records. The tunnel is cited among the longest high-altitude road tunnels in the world.

Working through a locally registered company makes it possible to meet local participation requirements in public tenders and to provide post-project maintenance and operating services on site. The same model underpins the group’s continuing intelligent highway and rail transport work in the Indian market; the subsidiary’s incorporation details appear in the group structure file.
