Status: The last completed recruitment drive was the 2025 intake (advert issued 14 September 2025; shortlists released 21–24 October 2025; interviews held November–December 2025). GSO Cadet is KDF’s officer-entry route, with two tracks: Regular (KCSE-only entry, 3-year training to a BSc in Defence and Security Studies) and Graduate (same KCSE minimum plus an existing Bachelor’s degree, 15-month training). No 2026 cadet intake has been announced; the figures below are from the last confirmed cycle, 2025.

GSO Cadet – Regular

Open to candidates aged 18-26 who hold a minimum mean grade of B (plain) in KCSE, with C+ in English, Mathematics and one science subject. Training runs three years and leads to a BSc degree in Defence and Security Studies on completion.

GSO Cadet – Graduate

Requires the same KCSE minimum as the Regular track, plus a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or institution in one of the eligible disciplines – a long list spanning engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, aeronautical and more), ICT, medicine, finance, law-adjacent fields, strategic communication, sports management and others. Training for this track runs 15 months.

Specialist Officers follow a shorter, 6-month training track and need the same base KCSE grade plus a Bachelor’s degree, relevant professional registration, and at least 2 years’ practising experience in their field. Chaplains and Imams are the one exemption, needing only a minimum C+ in KCSE plus theological qualifications and the relevant religious endorsement.
