Status: The last completed recruitment drive was the 2025 intake (advert issued 14 September 2025; shortlists released 21–24 October 2025; interviews held November–December 2025). As of 13 September 2026, the Ministry of Defence has not published an advert for a new 2026 recruitment exercise. Envanter Media checks mod.go.ke and updates this page as soon as that changes.

These are the eligibility rules from the Ministry of Defence’s most recent recruitment advert (the 2025 cycle). No new advert has been issued for 2026, so these figures are the last officially confirmed standard – not a guaranteed 2026 requirement, since the Ministry can revise thresholds when the next cycle opens.

Important: these are 2025-cycle requirements, the last official standard published. They are not automatically the requirements for a future intake – always confirm against the live advert once a new cycle is announced.

Be a Kenyan citizen holding a valid National ID card
Have no criminal record
Be medically fit per KDF standards
Bring original documents plus four copies of National ID, KRA PIN certificate and academic certificates

Female candidates must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or at any point during training. All candidates undergo a medical fitness screening to KDF standards.

Academic Qualifications by Category

GSO Cadet – Regular: mean grade B (plain) in KCSE with C+ in English, Mathematics and one science subject.
GSO Cadet – Graduate: the Regular minimum above, plus a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution in an eligible discipline.
Specialist Officers: the Regular KCSE minimum, a Bachelor’s degree, professional registration where applicable, and at least 2 years’ practising experience. Chaplains/Imams need only a minimum C+ in KCSE plus theological qualifications.
General Duty Recruits: minimum mean grade D (plain) in KCSE. NYS graduates who meet the general conditions get an added advantage.
Tradesmen/Women – Diploma track: minimum mean grade C (plain) in KCSE plus a relevant diploma, with statutory-body registration where applicable.
Tradesmen/Women – Certificate track: minimum mean grade D+ (plus) in KCSE plus a relevant certificate or Government Trade Test Grade II/Craft II.

Experience Requirements

Specialist Officers and Tradesmen/Women need a minimum of 2 years’ practising experience in their field, counted from the date of registration with the relevant regulatory or statutory body in Kenya where one applies.

KDF recruitment is completely free. The Ministry of Defence states that no applicant is required to pay anyone, at any stage, to secure a recruitment slot. What is the height requirement for KDF?
