Basic Military Training for KDF recruits runs seven months at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret. The most recent cohort (01/25) began training on 11 November 2025 and passed out on 13 August 2026, in a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto. Officer tracks (GSO Cadet, Specialist Officer) have separate, longer training timelines.

General Duty Recruits complete Basic Military Training at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret. What Basic Training Covers

Per the Ministry of Defence, recruits are instructed in “combat marksmanship, drill, field craft, physical training, career development and other essential military disciplines.” The programme is designed to progressively test physical endurance, mental resilience, teamwork and adaptability, while building discipline, leadership and military bearing.

What Happens After Training

Graduates are posted “within their respective Services, Formations and Units” – meaning across the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy – though the Ministry does not publicly detail individual unit assignments. The pass-out parade itself, presided over by the President as Commander-in-Chief, marks the formal transition from recruit to soldier.

KDF recruitment is completely free. The Ministry of Defence states that no applicant is required to pay anyone, at any stage, to secure a recruitment slot.
