ESEN: Sierra Nevada’s Ankara Affiliate and Its Growing ISR, EW and Avionics Line-Up

Few US defence companies have an engineering house embedded in Türkiye’s defence ecosystem. Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) does. ESEN Sistem Entegrasyon, established in Ankara in February 2012 by SNC owners Eren and Fatih Özmen, has grown into a supplier of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), electronic warfare and avionics products from its base at METU Technopolis.
The product line
- MATRIS: wide-area motion imagery (WAMI) for persistent surveillance, offered in land, airborne and aerostat variants.
- GÖRDES: vision-based navigation for GNSS-denied conditions. It won Türkiye’s TESİD Innovation and Creativity Award.
- GÖKHUN: a tactical multi-mission UAS, plus a man-portable mini-UAS.
- Airborne COMINT covering HF/VHF/UHF detection and geolocation, and an HFDF direction-finding system.
- TACOS and neoCAS collision-avoidance systems, radio navigation equipment and the EVeGA flight control computer.
- WISE23, an AI-enabled mission management system, and aircraft special-mission conversions with certification support.
Why GNSS-denied navigation matters now
Ukraine and the Eastern Mediterranean have shown how routinely GPS is jammed or spoofed. NATO air forces and UAS operators are looking for navigation that does not depend on satellite signals. Vision-based systems such as GÖRDES sit in the same category as the terrain- and image-referenced aids now being fielded by several European and US suppliers, and give Turkish platforms a domestic option.
Standards and NATO exposure
ESEN works to AS9100D and has completed a CMMI-DEV v2.0 Maturity Level 3 appraisal, both baseline expectations for Western avionics programmes. The company has taken part in NATO’s maritime unmanned systems symposium.
The space track
On 29 June 2022 Sierra Space, the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) and ESEN signed a five-year Memorandum of Cooperation covering Dream Chaser and the LIFE habitat, remote sensing, propulsion, crewed systems, space communications, LEO and lunar payload missions, and Turkish industry and academic participation. It runs to mid-2027. Dream Chaser’s first flight, Demo-1, was moved in September 2025 to late 2026 as a free-flyer that will not dock with the ISS.
