Saildrone Surveyor Fires First-Ever JAGM Missile at RIMPAC

A Saildrone-built Surveyor unmanned surface vessel (USV) fired a Lockheed Martin Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) off Hawaii on September 10 during the RIMPAC 2026 exercise, marking the first live missile shot ever launched from a Saildrone platform. The test, coordinated with the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, engaged a target simulating a fast surface threat.
The shot relied on the US Navy’s Adjunct Remote Engagement System (ARES), a remote weapons-control architecture that allows guided munitions to be cued and fired from an uncrewed maritime platform. Naval News described the event as a landmark for unmanned maritime systems given that it was the first missile launch from any Saildrone vessel.
Integration work behind the launch stemmed from a six-month joint development effort between Saildrone and Lockheed Martin that began in October 2025. The two companies moved quickly to adapt Surveyor — originally built as a multi-mission reconnaissance and data-collection platform — into a vessel capable of hosting and firing a guided weapon, reflecting the Navy’s push to accelerate weapons integration onto unmanned platforms.
Surveyor had previously been used mainly for ocean research and maritime domain awareness missions rather than strike roles. Successfully firing JAGM from the platform demonstrates that such vessels can move beyond a sensor-carrier function toward limited strike capability. Saildrone’s own release characterized the test as a milestone in “arming unmanned maritime systems.”
RIMPAC, held biennially, is the world’s largest multinational maritime exercise and functions as a proving ground where the US Navy tests emerging technology under near-operational conditions in front of allied observers. Conducting the Saildrone-JAGM test within RIMPAC 2026 signals the Navy’s interest in demonstrating unmanned maritime weapons integration to partner nations.
The test fits into the Navy’s broader move toward a “hybrid fleet” architecture, in which small and medium USVs increasingly take on surveillance, data-relay and limited strike missions, freeing larger crewed surface combatants to focus on more complex tasks. Saildrone’s Surveyor appears to sit as an intermediate step in that architecture, with the company’s larger Spectre platform positioned to eventually host more sophisticated weapon systems.
Detailed technical results from the test — including engagement range and hit accuracy — were not released by the Navy. Still, the demonstration stands as a reference case for JAGM’s flexibility across different launch platforms. JAGM was originally developed for helicopter-launched use from platforms such as the AH-64 Apache and AH-1Z Viper, combining laser and millimeter-wave radar guidance in a single multi-mode munition; extending it to an uncrewed surface vessel broadens Lockheed Martin’s platform base for the weapon considerably.
Program officials indicate further integration tests are expected to continue after RIMPAC, though no timeline has been given for when armed USVs might formally enter the fleet. The Navy’s push to arm low-cost, expendable unmanned surface vessels is also widely read as part of a broader effort to build a more distributed and resilient fleet architecture at lower unit cost than large crewed combatants, a consideration that has gained urgency amid China’s expanding naval buildup in the South China Sea.
