Fincantieri Lays Keel of Italy’s Second U212NFS Submarine, Delivery Set for 2030

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has held the keel-laying ceremony for the second-generation U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) destined for the Italian Navy, at its Muggiano shipyard near La Spezia. The program covers construction of four submarines plus associated logistic support, managed under OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement), the multinational body that oversees cooperative European defense programs. Delivery of the second boat is scheduled for 2030.
The U212NFS class represents a substantial evolution over the earlier U212A design, with greater design maturity, broader national technological content and tighter integration of onboard systems. Innovations developed by Italian industry — chiefly a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat system — are intended to deliver greater stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience than the preceding class.
Over a century of submarine-building at Muggiano
Fincantieri says the ceremony reaffirms the strategic role of its Muggiano shipyard in building the Italian Navy’s underwater component. With more than a century of activity and over one hundred submarines built, Muggiano is described as one of Italy’s principal centers for designing and constructing technologically complex underwater vessels. The program was recently reinforced through a contractual expansion covering new technological capabilities and integrated logistic support across the submarines’ full life cycle.
According to the company, the keel-laying of the second unit confirms production continuity on the U212NFS program and demonstrates Fincantieri’s ability to bring together shipyard competencies, technology and know-how alongside the strengths of the Italian industrial supply chain. The milestone also consolidates Fincantieri’s position as design authority and prime contractor, while helping grow Italian industrial skills in the underwater domain.
A reference point for Turkey’s own submarine ambitions
Italy’s U212NFS program offers an indirect point of comparison for Turkey’s own national submarine effort, MİLDEN, and for the Reis-class (Type 214TN) boats still under construction at Gölcük Naval Shipyard. Both countries are building NATO-interoperable submarines with air-independent propulsion (AIP), though Italy’s lithium-ion battery approach represents an alternative to conventional AIP technology that only a handful of navies worldwide have adopted so far. In that sense, progress on the U212NFS program offers a live data point for the technology choices that may feed into future Turkish submarine designs.
Multinational programs run under the OCCAR umbrella have become something of a template for cost-sharing and technology transfer among European navies. Italy tying its submarine production capacity to a long-term build line with OCCAR’s backing fits a broader pattern of NATO navies renewing their underwater capabilities through sustained, multi-decade programs — a pattern also visible in the jointly run German-Norwegian 212CD program, underscoring how European submarine-building is increasingly organized around multinational consortia rather than single-nation efforts.
A steady production rhythm across four boats
The first U212NFS had its own keel-laying in February 2026, with delivery penciled in for 2029. Laying the second boat’s keel roughly eight months later, with delivery set a year after the first, points to a program holding a steady, back-to-back production rhythm rather than slipping between units. Fincantieri’s own emphasis on “production continuity” reinforces that reading: in multi-boat submarine programs, keeping work flowing without gaps between hulls is usually what keeps both cost and the shipyard’s skilled workforce under control.
Detailed build schedules for the program’s third and fourth boats have not yet been made public, but comparable OCCAR-managed multi-unit programs typically space keel-layings one to two years apart, depending on hull size and yard capacity. On that basis, a fourth U212NFS delivery sometime around the mid-2030s looks like a reasonable working assumption.
