TB2 vs MQ-9 Reaper vs Wing Loong II: The Combat UAV Comparison Export Buyers Are Searching For
When a country with a $2-5 billion defence budget asks “which armed drone should we buy?”, three names dominate the shortlist: Bayraktar TB2, General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper and Chengdu Wing Loong II. Each represents a different bargain — capability, price, and political access.
The Specs That Matter
UAV specifications often look similar on paper. What separates these three is endurance per dollar, payload flexibility and — crucially — whether the seller will let you have it.

Combat Record — Where Each Drone Was Forged
The TB2 became famous in Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine, where it destroyed armoured columns and air-defence systems at a price point that rewrote drone economics. Reuters and ISW both documented its decisive role in the 2020 Karabakh war.
The MQ-9 has the longest combat record of the three — two decades of strikes from Afghanistan to Yemen — and remains the platform every Western air force benchmarks against. Its payload and ceiling let it carry larger precision munitions and electronic warfare pods that TB2 simply cannot lift.
Wing Loong II saw heavy use with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt in Yemen and Libya. Reports of higher attrition rates against modern air defences exist, but its cost makes losses cheaper to absorb.
The Real Decision Factor — Who Will Sell To You
The single most important variable is not on the spec sheet. The MQ-9 is governed by the U.S. Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and ITAR. Many countries that want it cannot get it — or wait years for a State Department green light.
Türkiye and China face fewer self-imposed restrictions. The TB2 is operated by at least 30 nations across Africa, the Gulf, Central Asia, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. Wing Loong II is operated by roughly a dozen, mostly in the Middle East and Africa. For a country that wants armed UAVs within 12 months, the choice is often between Ankara and Beijing — not Washington.
Cost Per Hour Of Capability
A buyer with $50 million can field one MQ-9 system or roughly eight TB2 platforms with control stations. For counter-insurgency, border surveillance and precision strike against irregular forces — the missions most export buyers actually fly — the TB2’s economy is hard to beat. The Reaper’s edge appears against peer adversaries with serious air defences.

Verdict for Export Buyers
TB2 if you want proven capability, fast delivery and political access at a price you can replicate at scale. MQ-9 if you have U.S. alliance status and a budget that accepts long lead times. Wing Loong II if absolute lowest cost matters more than sustainment and software support.
