What Indigenous Systems Are on TCG Akar (A-580)?
TCG Akar (A-580) is a member of the Akar-class replenishment oiler in Turkish Naval Forces service. Built/procured via Gölcük Naval Shipyard, it entered the inventory on 9 September 1987. Completed at Gölcük Naval Shipyard in 1987, TCG Akar is the backbone of the Turkish Navy’s replenishment-at-sea capability — an early example, years before MİLGEM, that Turkish yards could build large-tonnage ships.

SSB’s role
Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) acts as the procurement authority and coordinator for naval platforms: it sets requirements, manages contracts and oversees integration of domestic subcontractors (ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, ROKETSAN, STM, TÜBİTAK). The physical construction is carried out by the prime contractor shipyard and the systems are developed by the respective defence companies — SSB does not itself build the ship.
