Savronik power systems: ATAK, GÖKBEY and HÜRKUŞ-B

Savronik power systems: ATAK, GÖKBEY and HÜRKUŞ-B
Show Article Summary

Quick answer: Savronik power distribution systems are a family of units that distribute, protect and control electrical power on air, land and naval platforms. According to the company’s official website, more than 35 years of experience in this field have produced close to 90 product configurations and around 3,000 units. Reference programmes include the ATAK helicopter panels (2010), the HÜRKUŞ-B electrical power system (2015), the GÖKBEY electrical power distribution system (2016) and ASELSAN’s ADOP, FIRTINA, KORKUT and 35 mm air defence modernisation work.

What does a military power distribution unit do?

On a military platform, electrical power drawn from a generator or battery has to be distributed under control to weapon systems, avionics, navigation equipment and mission computers. Power distribution units apply short-circuit, over- and under-voltage and reverse-voltage protection, and keep critical loads alive in the event of a fault. Alongside electromechanical relays and contactors, Savronik’s units use the company’s own solid-state power controller (SSPC) design; they are qualified to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461F and RTCA/DO-160G.

This product class is a typical example of the prime contractor-subcontractor model in the Turkish defence industry: while Turkish Aerospace (TUSAŞ) and ASELSAN take on the platform and mission systems, specialist subsystems such as power distribution go to focused suppliers like Savronik. The same model is visible in the company’s fire control and munitions electronics work.

Air platforms: ATAK, GÖKBEY, HÜRKUŞ-B

According to the official history, the main contracts signed with TUSAŞ are as follows:

  • 2007: the avionics activation panel for the T-38 modernisation (the ARI programme).
  • 2010: a development contract for illuminated panels, a dimmer unit and circuit breaker panels for the ATAK helicopter.
  • 2015: a serial production contract for the electrical power system of the HÜRKUŞ-B new-generation basic trainer aircraft.
  • 2016: the electrical power distribution system contract for the Indigenous Helicopter (GÖKBEY) programme.

The company says its AC power distribution units handle 115 VAC and 28 VDC distribution with FPGA-based monitoring, that it carries out flight-critical hardware design at design assurance level A (DAL-A), and that it supports MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC-429 interfaces. DAL-A is the highest design assurance level in aviation hardware, applied where a failure could be catastrophic; working at that level places the company among a limited number of certified suppliers. The illuminated panels on the cockpit side are NVIS compatible; the panel products are itemised in the product guide.

Land and naval platforms

The land and naval products cover 220 V and three-phase 380 V AC switching, the 115 VAC/60 Hz distribution specific to naval platforms, and 28 and 56 VDC options. The units are microprocessor controlled, can be monitored remotely over RS-422, CAN Bus and Ethernet, keep date- and time-stamped logs and include built-in test. Other units in the product family

Interface and display units show system status on an LCD screen and pass commands to the power distribution system; platform data such as temperature, speed, pressure and revolutions can be read from sensors and shown on the display panels. On the military system outfitting side, the company designs shelters to NATO 6516, integrates 19-inch racks and consoles, designs consoles to MIL-STD-1472 and produces cabling to IPC/WHMA-A-620; post-integration EMI-EMC and rain tests are run on its own infrastructure. On the civil and industrial side, a 1U, 19-inch rack-mounted intelligent power distribution management unit with eight sockets, named PORSUK, is sold for IT rooms and data centres; it supports central management of up to 16 units and can switch between operating modes according to ambient temperature and humidity.

Frequently asked questions

Which standards do Savronik power distribution units meet?

The official site states MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461F, RTCA/DO-160G and EN 61000-4-2 Level 3; RTCA/DO-254 and MIL-STD-704 are cited for avionics products.

How many product configurations have been produced?

The company gives a figure of close to 90 configurations and around 3,000 units manufactured.

What is an SSPC?

A solid-state power controller: a power controller that uses semiconductor switching instead of a mechanical relay and provides fault detection and protection. Savronik states that it uses its own SSPC design.

Who supplies GÖKBEY’s power system?

Savronik announces in its official history that it signed the GÖKBEY electrical power distribution system contract with TUSAŞ in 2016; current supply chain information for the programme is not separately disclosed by TUSAŞ.

Is PORSUK a military product?

No. PORSUK is an industrial product developed for IT rooms and data centres; it is the civil application of the company’s military power distribution experience.
