Leopard 2A8: NATO’s New Reference Tank with Trophy APS

The Leopard 2A8 is KNDS Deutschland’s latest Leopard 2 variant, featuring Rafael Trophy active protection as standard equipment. First production vehicles were delivered to Germany and Norway in November 2025; over 350 orders placed by five NATO nations.
Trophy APS as Standard: Why It Matters
Ukraine proved that a large share of tank losses stem from cheap ATGMs and drones. The Leopard 2A8 integrates Trophy from the factory, eliminating retrofit cost and delay while delivering operational readiness against current threats.
NATO Orders
Germany ordered 198, Norway 54, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and the Netherlands signed contracts — total 350+ vehicles reflecting NATO’s increased defense spending post-Ukraine.
Roof Armor Enhancement
Lessons from Lancet and kamikaze drone strikes in Ukraine directly shaped the A8 design: modular roof protection panels come as standard.

Türk Muadili
Turkey’s OTOKAR ALTAY competes in the same weight class. The A8 delivers Trophy as standard while ALTAY’s Pulat APS remains under development. Turkey also fields 354 Leopard 2A4 and 170 Leopard 2A5 — familiarity with the platform eases any future upgrade path.
