Allison to Supply Transmissions for About 3,000 German EAGLE V Armoured Vehicles
US-based Allison Transmission has announced it will supply fully automatic transmissions for roughly 3,000 EAGLE V armoured vehicles to be produced for Germany by General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS). The agreement includes an option for up to 2,000 additional vehicles.
According to the company’s 25 July 2026 statement, the vehicles will use the Allison 2500 Specialty Series (2500 SP) transmission. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027 and will run through Sterki AG, Allison’s authorised dealer and distributor in Switzerland. No contract value was disclosed.
What the number does and does not tell us
The figure of 3,000 vehicles stands out, because the German Armed Forces have procured a total of roughly 670 EAGLE IV and EAGLE V vehicles since 2008. The Bundeswehr also ordered 80 EAGLE V 6×6 protected ambulances, with deliveries beginning in May 2025.
A distinction is needed here. This is a subsystem supply announcement — a transmission manufacturer disclosing an arrangement reached with a prime contractor. No confirmed German Ministry of Defence order for 3,000 vehicles has been officially announced. The figure may reflect production volume GDELS anticipates, but the final quantity will depend on framework contracts the Bundeswehr signs and on budget tranches.
That gap — between anticipated production volume and firm orders — recurs constantly in defence industry announcements, and reading it correctly is what separates a signal from a headline.
Which variants are involved
The transmissions will go into two main configurations: EAGLE V 4×4 command-and-control vehicles and EAGLE V 6×6 medium armoured ambulances. That mix indicates the order is weighted toward support and combat service support roles rather than direct combat vehicles.
The EAGLE family is a protected wheeled vehicle line originally developed by Switzerland’s Mowag and now produced under GDELS. Its modular design allows a single chassis to be configured as a command vehicle, ambulance, reconnaissance platform or ammunition carrier — and the chassis has also served as a carrier for air defence systems.
A twenty-year supply relationship
Allison’s EMEA Sales Director Taner Gider said the company’s “decades of experience in defense applications” made it the preferred choice. Every EAGLE model produced since 2005 has carried the 2500 SP as standard equipment, pointing to a supply relationship spanning more than two decades.
Fully automatic transmissions matter in military vehicles for two reasons: reduced driver workload, and continuity of torque delivery across broken terrain. In protected wheeled vehicles, where added armour drives weight steadily upward, the drivetrain’s ability to absorb that growth is what determines whether mobility holds.
Germany’s land vehicle refresh
The agreement fits Germany’s broader push to renew its land vehicle inventory. The competitive angle
Protected wheeled vehicles are among the strongest export segments of the Turkish defence industry. Production volumes in the thousands in Europe point both to sharper competition and to a widening subsystem supply chain.
The subsystem dimension is itself worth noting. In an armoured vehicle programme, drivetrain components — transmission, axles, engine, suspension — are frequently sourced from suppliers in countries other than the prime contractor’s.
