Ada-Class (MİLGEM) vs Gowind 2500 vs SIGMA: The Mid-Tier Corvette Choice

A navy that cannot afford frigates but needs more than fast-attack craft buys a corvette. In the 2,000-3,000 tonne segment three Western-pattern families dominate the export market: Türkiye’s Ada-class (MİLGEM), France’s Naval Group Gowind 2500 and the Dutch Damen SIGMA family.

The MİLGEM Advantage — Build Where You Buy

Türkiye’s signature export model is local construction. Pakistan’s MİLGEM order built two corvettes in Karachi alongside two in Istanbul, with full technology and intellectual property transfer for the locally built hulls. Ukraine’s Hetman Ivan Mazepa was launched from Okean Shipyard in Mykolaiv under the same model.

This is harder for Naval Group and Damen to match. They build at home and sell abroad; Türkiye builds, sells and licenses.

Combat System And Munition Sovereignty

Ada-class ships sail with GENESIS combat management, Atmaca anti-ship missiles, HİSAR-derived MİDLAS air defence and ASELSAN sensors. A buyer of MİLGEM is not just buying a hull — they are buying a sovereign-supplied combat ecosystem.

Gowind and SIGMA, by contrast, integrate buyer-specified subsystems. That can be an advantage if you want to mix-and-match — and a complexity if you want a single supplier accountable for the whole ship.

Where The Europeans Still Lead

Anti-submarine warfare integration and reduced acoustic signature on Gowind 2500 are widely regarded as best-in-class for the size. SIGMA’s modular hull design has been refined across multiple operators and gives buyers options on length, weapons fit and propulsion. Both have longer track records with NATO standards integration.

Verdict for Export Buyers

Gowind 2500 if you want best-in-class anti-submarine capability and accept French integration. SIGMA if you want maximum modularity and Damen’s proven export programme management. Ada-class (MİLGEM) if you want sovereign munitions, local construction, full ToT and a single supplier accountable end-to-end.
