Strike Warrior 26: German Submarine Lands Royal Marines in Scotland, Portuguese Frigate Fires in Support

Royal Marines infiltrated the Scottish coast from a German Navy submarine during NATO exercise Strike Warrior 26, then directed naval gunfire from a Portuguese warship against simulated targets. The Royal Navy described the operation as “part of the largest test of all arms of the UK Commando Force in 15 years.” The sequence ran as one continuous chain: submarine-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, a commando beach infiltration, and naval fire support.
Strike Warrior 26 runs from September 28 to October 9 off Scotland and in the North Sea, drawing more than 2,000 personnel from the UK, Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Norway and the United States. The exercise involves eight warships and 19 aircraft, with scenarios spanning the Hebrides, the northwest approaches, Galloway, the Scottish Borders and the North Sea.
In the submarine serial, an unnamed German Navy boat was tasked with underwater detection and identification of the target area. Royal Marines Commandos then used small inflatable boats to land at Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly point of mainland Britain, where they set up an observation post to locate and designate targets.
148 (Meiktila) Commando Forward Observation Battery, a Royal Artillery unit integrated with the Royal Marines, used that targeting data to direct fire from the Portuguese frigate NRP Dom Francisco de Almeida against positions treated as hostile under the exercise scenario. The battery had earlier coordinated with NATO’s Standing Maritime Group One, directing simulated strikes from the Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Amstel and the Canadian frigate HMCS St. John’s.
By the battery’s own assessment, it had not achieved this level of coordination with real naval and land assets in nearly three decades. That claim points to the exercise’s significance beyond headcount — it tested the operational depth of integration between distinct NATO force elements working a single targeting chain.
148 Battery specializes in directing naval gunfire support for ground forces operating in denied or hard-to-reach terrain, matching aircraft carrier groups, frigates or submarines to the right target. Strike Warrior 26’s scenario tested that capability with both allied forces and multiple different weapon platforms in the same serial.
Strike Warrior has replaced the Joint Warrior series, previously held each spring and autumn. The 2024 edition centered on the carrier HMS Prince of Wales; the 2026 edition shifts emphasis toward amphibious operations, anti-submarine warfare, cross-border logistics, maritime security and underground medical facilities.
Using a German submarine directly in a commando infiltration role demonstrates NATO’s ability to employ allied submarine fleets not just for reconnaissance and deterrence, but for special-forces transport as well — an integration that matters for confirming different national platforms can operate seamlessly within a single operational chain during a crisis.
The exercise area is also a strategic choice. The Hebrides and the northwest approaches sit near what NATO calls the GIUK gap — the Greenland-Iceland-UK line considered critical for tracking Russian submarine transits into the Atlantic. Strike Warrior 26’s emphasis on anti-submarine warfare and high-latitude scenarios in this area aligns with NATO’s North Atlantic deterrence priorities.
For Turkey, a NATO member that regularly contributes to alliance maritime groups and joint exercises, Strike Warrior 26 offers a concrete example of how multinational sea-land integration functions in practice — illustrating how platform diversity across the alliance is fused at the operational level.
