HENSOLDT and Ukraine: German Radar and SIGINT in the War Against Russia

HENSOLDT AG became one of Germany’s most critical contributors to Ukraine’s air defense capability following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The company’s involvement reflects a seismic shift in German arms export policy — from strict restraint to active frontline support.

TRML-4D: The Radar at the Center

The system that anchored HENSOLDT’s Ukraine role is the TRML-4D short-range air defense radar. A C-band AESA radar capable of simultaneously tracking 450 targets, the TRML-4D was integrated as the fire control and search radar within Germany’s IRIS-T SLM air defense system deliveries. While Diehl Defence manufactures the IRIS-T missile, the overall system depends on HENSOLDT’s radar to detect and cue threats — making HENSOLDT an invisible but indispensable link in Germany’s air defense support chain to Ukraine.

PEGASUS: The Intelligence Dimension

Less visible but equally significant is HENSOLDT’s PEGASUS SIGINT system — a passive electronic reconnaissance platform that detects, classifies, and geolocates enemy radar and communications signals. Under Germany’s intelligence-sharing framework, PEGASUS-derived data reportedly contributed to Ukraine’s situational awareness, though the exact deployment configuration remains partially classified.

Legal and Political Hurdles

Germany’s historically cautious arms export policy made these transfers remarkable. The post-2022 Zeitenwende (turning point) doctrine unlocked deliveries that would previously have been inconceivable, with HENSOLDT supporting not just initial system shipments but spare parts and training as well.
