What Indigenous Systems Are on TCG Hızırreis? The Second Reis-Class Submarine
TCG Hızırreis (S-331) is the second submarine of the Reis class (Type 214) built under Turkey’s New Type Submarine Project. Built at Gölcük Naval Shipyard Command under license and technical support from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, it entered service on 20 December 2025 at a joint ceremony in Istanbul Shipyard alongside the Ç-159 landing craft and the ULAQ unmanned surface vessel.

Indigenous systems
While the hull design and main propulsion are German-licensed, a significant share of the submarine’s communications and internal systems are Turkish-built. ASELSAN supplied the alarm and announcement system, electronic support system, encrypted telephone system, integrated communications, internal communications, satellite communication terminal and IFF system. HAVELSAN developed the submarine’s command and control system, delivered integrated and tested to Gölcük Shipyard.
Licensed production and SSB’s role
The New Type Submarine Project is procured by SSB, but the hull design belongs to Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems; construction takes place at Gölcük Naval Shipyard Command. This differs from the fully indigenous MİLGEM/İstif design model, reflecting a gradual rise in domestic content within the internal systems.
