The development
Taiwan’s Navy commissioned ROCS Tan Chiang, the first ship of the second production batch of the catamaran-hulled Tuo Chiang class. The eighth vessel of the class, Tan Chiang, raised its flag at Tsoying, Taiwan’s largest naval base.
Officials said all twelve ships of the Tuo Chiang series are scheduled to be delivered and commissioned by the end of 2026.
The Tuo Chiang class
The Tuo Chiang class is a family of fast attack corvettes marked by a low-radar-signature catamaran hull and high speed, armed with anti-ship and air-defence missiles. These small, agile platforms form the naval leg of Taiwan’s asymmetric-defence concept.
The second-batch ships carry improved sensor and weapon integration over the first batch, with added emphasis on air-defence capability.
Regional significance
The commissioning comes amid intensified Chinese naval activity and more frequent transits around Taiwan. A fleet of small, fast, missile-armed corvettes is a concrete expression of an asymmetric approach designed to deter a numerically superior opponent.
