HII Wins $56M AUKUS Contract: US Engineering Support for SSN-AUKUS Design

The US Navy awarded HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division a $56 million contract for engineering and design support under the AUKUS partnership. An option, if exercised, could push the contract’s cumulative value to $91 million. The award covers both direct engineering support for the SSN-AUKUS nuclear submarine’s design and continued assistance to the UK and Australia on technology integration, supply chain and digital transformation.
Two work streams: FMS support and US industry support
The contract splits into two distinct scopes. Under Foreign Military Sales (FMS), NNS will keep supporting the UK and Australia on technology insertion, engineering, supply chain management, workforce development and digital transformation. Under United States Industry Support (USIS), NNS engineers and designers will contribute directly to the design of the SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine that the UK and Australia will build.

HII’s broader role in AUKUS
NNS Vice President of Program Management Bryan Caccavale said the company’s long-standing nuclear experience directly benefits AUKUS’s shared security objectives, adding that NNS is honored to contribute more to the partnership. HII says its AUKUS work spans all of its business divisions.
The award builds on HII’s earlier AUKUS steps. Its Mission Technologies division won the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) Program, which aims to qualify Australian suppliers for the US submarine industrial base. In December 2025, HII won the Australian Submarine Agency’s Nuclear Capability Advisory Services (ANCAS) contract, providing program management and technical services to Australia’s nuclear submarine programs. The company is also working with Australian industry and academia to train engineers, maritime specialists and nuclear tradespeople for Australia’s nuclear submarine enterprise.

Why AUKUS’s submarine architecture matters
SSN-AUKUS is the most ambitious industrial undertaking of the three-nation partnership (Australia, the UK and the US). The program envisions Australia becoming a nuclear-powered submarine operator for the first time, the UK developing a successor to its Astute class, and the US industrial base integrating into a supply chain shared across all three countries. Against that backdrop, having a yard with NNS’s deep nuclear shipbuilding experience contribute directly to the design process stands out as a step meant to reduce the program’s technical risk.
The contract’s relatively modest size — $56 million is a small figure next to the multi-billion-dollar scale of Virginia- and Columbia-class construction contracts — actually signals where the program stands: SSN-AUKUS is still in engineering and design development, not production. Contracts like this one build the technical backbone that larger production contracts will later rest on.
Testing a three-nation supply chain
One of AUKUS’s biggest tests is synchronizing three separate national industrial bases around a single submarine program. Having the US maintain its own Virginia-class build tempo while simultaneously providing engineering support to its British and Australian partners requires a serious balancing act in industrial capacity. NNS’s role under this contract is one concrete expression of that balance on the American side.
