Leopard 2 is the world’s most widely used third-generation main battle tank, built by Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (now KNDS) and Rheinmetall. About 3,200 have been built since 1979, serving with more than 19 countries from Germany to Singapore and Türkiye to Canada. This dossier compiles which countries operate it and in what numbers, its delivery timeline, its relationship with Türkiye and technical data from open sources.

The Turkish Land Forces are a major operator with 339+15 Leopard 2A4, examined here alongside the indigenous ALTAY.

What is the Leopard 2?

The Leopard 2 is a third-generation main battle tank developed by West Germany during the Cold War that became NATO’s de facto standard tank. With a 120 mm gun, composite armor and high mobility, it is among the most exported and longest-serving platforms in its class.

It has been continuously modernized from the 2A4 through the 2A5, 2A6, 2A7 and the newest 2A8 — keeping a 1970s-designed platform relevant against current threats.

Which countries operate it?

The Leopard 2 is the most widespread Western main battle tank globally. The table summarises the main operators and approximate numbers per open sources.

Figures are from open sources and change constantly with modernization, donations and new orders. After the war in Ukraine, many countries are renewing their fleets with the 2A8.

How many were built and delivered?

About 3,200 Leopard 2 of all versions have been built since the first delivery in 1979. The Netherlands was the first export customer with 445 tanks, after which the tank spread across Europe and the world.

Production revived with the Leopard 2A8 unveiled in 2025 after a long pause. KNDS received 350 2A8 orders from five NATO nations — the first new-build Leopard 2 batch since 1992.

Relationship with Türkiye

The Turkish Land Forces procured 339+15 (about 354) Leopard 2A4 from Germany between 2006 and 2011, making it one of the army’s most powerful armored assets. But during Euphrates Shield (2016–2017), the 2A4’s armor proved inadequate against modern anti-tank missiles and IED/SVBIED attacks.

This experience accelerated two efforts in Türkiye: modernizing the existing Leopard 2A4 (ROKETSAN’s armor package, 40→280 tanks; BMC’s TİYK-LEO 2A4, 81+250 tanks) and developing the indigenous ALTAY main battle tank. The Leopard 2 is thus a key example of why Türkiye builds a national tank.

Comparison with the ALTAY and Turkish equivalent

The Leopard 2 is in the same class as Türkiye’s indigenous ALTAY. Both carry a 120 mm L/55 gun, composite armor and a modern fire-control system. The ALTAY additionally comes with the indigenous AKKOR active protection system and (in T2) the indigenous BATU engine.

Türkiye’s Leopard 2 experience — especially in Syria — directly shaped the ALTAY’s protection and active-defense priorities. The Leopard 2 is thus both part of Türkiye’s current armored power and one of the inspirations for its national tank program.

Manufacturer: KNDS and Rheinmetall

The Leopard 2’s prime manufacturer is KNDS, formed by the merger of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann with France’s Nexter; Rheinmetall plays a key role in both production and the 120 mm gun.

These two German giants returned the tank to serial production with the Leopard 2A8, positioning it as Europe’s most-preferred MBT during the continent’s rearmament. Rheinmetall also forms local partnerships in various countries, including Türkiye.
