K2 Black Panther: South Korea’s Tank That Won 1,000 Orders from Poland

The K2 Black Panther is South Korea’s third-generation main battle tank featuring an autoloader and KAPS active protection system. Poland ordered 980 vehicles (180 direct + 800 K2PL license), making it one of the most successful tank export programs in history.
Autoloader Advantage
The K2 operates with a crew of three thanks to its autoloader, firing 10-15 rounds per minute. The Korean Active Protection System (KAPS) defeats incoming ATGMs and RPGs before impact.
Poland Deal — NATO’s Largest Tank Procurement
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland signed contracts for 180 direct-purchase K2s plus 800 K2PL license-produced tanks, the largest single tank export program in South Korean history.
Historical Link with ALTAY
Hyundai Rotem provided technical consulting during Turkey’s ALTAY MBT development. The two platforms share design philosophy, but the K2’s proven autoloader and active protection give it a current operational edge over ALTAY.

Türk Muadili
Turkey’s OTOKAR ALTAY is the closest domestic counterpart, sharing design lineage via Hyundai Rotem technology transfer. ALTAY must close the gap in autoloader integration and active protection to reach K2’s operational standard.
