France’s First FDI Frigate Amiral Ronarc’h Completes 123-Day Global Combat Trial
The Amiral Ronarc’h, the lead ship of the French Navy’s next-generation frigate program, has completed an extensive 123-day combat evaluation cruise. According to Naval Group, the ship covered 24,850 nautical miles across regions from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean. The mission tested combat systems, propulsion, cooling, maintenance requirements and crew workload across varying climates.
The FDI class and Amiral Ronarc’h
The FDI (Defence and Intervention Frigate) is a multi-role warship of about 4,500 tonnes displacement, 122 meters long and capable of 27 knots, operated by a relatively small crew of 132. Amiral Ronarc’h was floated in November 2022 and began sea trials in October 2024.
Weapons and sensor fit
The FDI class’s standout feature is the Thales Sea Fire radar. With four fixed active electronically scanned array (AESA) panels, it gives the ship continuous 360-degree air surveillance. The frigate carries Aster missiles fired from a 16-cell Sylver A50 vertical launcher for air defense, and eight Exocet MM40 Block 3C anti-ship missiles in two groups.
For anti-submarine warfare it integrates a CAPTAS-4 Compact variable-depth sonar and MU90 lightweight torpedoes, and it is armed with a Leonardo 76/62 Super Rapid gun. The package forms a balanced multi-role architecture against air, surface and sub-surface threats.
Path to service
A maintenance period is planned for Amiral Ronarc’h between September and December 2026, after which the ship is expected to enter operational service in late 2026 or 2027. France has ordered five FDI frigates in total, with deliveries planned through 2032. With these ships, the French Navy’s first-rank frigate fleet will reach 15 units: 2 Horizon, 8 FREMM and 5 FDI.
Significance for Turkey and the Mediterranean
The FDI class is also an export platform. Greece is acquiring FDI frigates from France, and its ships carry a wider 32-cell Sylver configuration versus France’s 16-cell fit. The arrival of such modern frigates is closely watched in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean naval balance. Turkey answers the same requirement through its MILGEM program and Istanbul-class frigates, increasingly integrating indigenous sensors and weapons. Continued modern-frigate procurement in the region points to intensifying competition in sensor-missile integration aboard naval platforms.
