Switzerland Shortlists Barak MX and SAMP/T NG for Long-Range Air Defence
Show Article Summary

Switzerland has cut its choice for a second long-range air defence system to two candidates: Israel Aerospace Industries’ Barak MX and Eurosam’s SAMP/T NG. The Federal Council announced the shortlist on 28 October 2026 and told the defence department to keep evaluating both. No system has been selected and no contract signed. The Patriot order has not been cancelled.

What the Federal Council decided

According to Defense News and Defence-Industry.eu, which cite armasuisse, the Council reviewed offers from four manufacturers in France, Israel and South Korea. It cited technical, military, arms-policy and security-policy factors. The defence department must now weigh foreign and economic policy as well, together with other federal departments.

The stated rationale is straightforward: Switzerland needs a long-range layer against attacks from a distance, ballistic missiles included, and a second system should widen the protected area and reduce dependence on a single supplier. The number of fire units and a contract date were not disclosed.

Money and timeline

Parliament is due to debate an extra CHF 24 billion for the armed forces in its winter session. The package includes CHF 6 billion for the second long-range system and at least part of Patriot’s additional costs. The government expects to decide on next steps in early 2027. These are budget lines, not a unit price.

The Patriot background

The shortlist follows a delivery crisis. In a 13 May 2026 statement, the defence department (VBS/armasuisse) said the US had estimated a four-to-five-year delay in February 2025, and Bern has now been told to expect five to seven years, partly because of the war in the Middle East. Costs are rising, and Switzerland is still withholding payments to Washington. According to OPEX360, Switzerland ordered five Patriot systems in 2022 for about CHF 2.3 billion, and armasuisse director Urs Loher told NZZ that the US Foreign Military Sales route offers no competent court for fixed-price disputes, no recourse if deliveries are redirected and no late-delivery penalties. The same report says the units meant for Switzerland will go to Germany and part of the prepayment will be recovered. The Council said cancelling Patriot without an alternative is unacceptable under current conditions.

What is Barak MX?

Barak MX is IAI’s modular, network-centric air and missile defence system. IAI’s product page lists four interceptors in one family: SR (15 km), MR (35 km), LR (70 km) and ER (150 km), covering roughly 2 to 150 km. Those are manufacturer figures. The only confirmed European operator is Slovakia, which approved a EUR 560 million purchase in December 2024; Denmark dropped a Barak MX plan in October 2025. For the system’s export record and its delays, see our earlier analysis of Barak MX (in Turkish).

What is SAMP/T NG?

SAMP/T NG is the new-generation system from Eurosam, the MBDA-Thales venture, firing Aster 30 missiles. Open-source compilations cite a range beyond 150 km against air-breathing targets and tracking of up to 1,000 targets; we could not confirm these from a manufacturer document. Orders are clearer: France is reported to have ordered 8 fire units, Italy 10, and Denmark chose 4 in September 2025. Eurosam told swissinfo that an order in 2026 could mean deliveries in 2028-2029. That is a company claim, not a contract term.

Who was left out

In May armasuisse asked five manufacturers for bids, from Germany, France, Israel and South Korea. OPEX360 lists Diehl (IRIS-T SLX), Hanwha (L-SAM), Rafael (David’s Sling), IAI and Eurosam, and reports that Diehl was eliminated in September. The official announcement does not name the two companies that dropped out. Switzerland has already bought Diehl’s IRIS-T SLM for medium range (five fire units, per swissinfo) and Rheinmetall’s Skynex for short range. OPEX360 adds that Swiss press had considered the two Israeli bids unlikely for political and industrial reasons, which makes the outcome a surprise. That is the outlet’s reading, not an official reason. Our earlier piece on Switzerland’s interest in buying directly from US manufacturers gives further context.

A Turkish yardstick: SİPER

Türkiye’s SİPER family sits in the same long-range class, though it was not part of the Swiss tender. The table is a class comparison only.

The Turkish row rests on Army Recognition’s account: SSB led development, ASELSAN says it designed the fire control, communications and radar in-house, ROKETSAN developed the missile and TÜBİTAK SAGE contributed. Block 1 reportedly passed a battery-level acceptance test at Sinop. A like-for-like comparison of range, interceptor stocks and ballistic-missile defence needs official data.

What to watch

If parliament approves the funding, the government will set out its path in early 2027. Three questions matter: how many fire units, whether a European production requirement holds, and how the Patriot talks end.

FAQ

Which air defence system has Switzerland chosen?

None yet. Barak MX and SAMP/T NG were shortlisted on 28 October 2026 and evaluation continues.

Has Switzerland cancelled the Patriot?

No. The Federal Council said cancelling without an alternative is unacceptable, and talks with the US on delivery terms continue.

What is the range of Barak MX?

IAI lists interceptors with ranges of 15, 35, 70 and 150 km.

When will Switzerland decide?

No date is official. Next steps are expected in early 2027, after parliament addresses funding.
