Boeing announced on 22 July 2026 that it is readying the first CH-47F Chinook Block II heavy-lift helicopter for the UK. The first aircraft’s fuselage assembly is complete and painted, and it is in final assembly at Boeing’s Philadelphia facility.

With a 14-helicopter order, the UK will be the first international operator of the Block II variant. Germany and Japan have also committed to the type, spreading Block II across the export market.

What Block II Changes

Block II offers greater payload capacity through structural enhancements, more powerful engines, and improved ground-maintenance features designed to lower operating costs. The aim is to boost lift capacity while reducing downtime.

The new helicopters will let the UK retire its oldest CH-47 airframes. The fleet will be complemented by 23 Leonardo AW149 multirole helicopters ordered separately.

Why Heavy Lift Matters

Heavy-lift helicopters are indispensable for troop and cargo movement, logistics, evacuation and special-operations support. The Chinook has been the backbone of this mission set for NATO armies for decades.

The progress of Block II export production strengthens Boeing’s position in the vertical-lift market and modernizes allied air-mobility capability.

Why It Matters

Heavy-lift capability is a core component of NATO’s rapid deployment and logistics. Tracking global trends in the heavy class helps assess capability gaps as nations expand their rotary-wing ecosystems.
