US Army Awards AeroVironment $500 Million Counter-Drone Contract

The US Department of Defense has awarded AeroVironment a $500 million firm-fixed-price contract to supply the US Army’s commercial counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) requirement. The award, announced July 1, 2026, was issued by the US Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, under contract number W912CH-26-D-A073.
Scope of the contract
The agreement runs through June 29, 2029, and covers layered defense capabilities against a wide range of aerial threats — both larger unmanned aircraft and commercially available quadcopters and fixed-wing drones. Coverage spans first-person-view (FPV) attack quadcopters through larger reconnaissance and one-way attack UAVs.
AeroVironment’s technology base
AeroVironment is known for its Switchblade family of loitering munitions and its Titan series of radio-frequency jamming systems, which disrupt the control and navigation signals used by hostile drones. In April 2026, the company introduced Halo_Shield, a modular C-UAS platform designed to detect, track and defeat threats ranging from drone swarms to subsonic cruise missiles.
Why it matters
The war in Ukraine has demonstrated how decisive cheap commercial drones have become on the modern battlefield. Drawing on that experience, the US Army is prioritizing a layered, scalable defense architecture to protect fixed installations and maneuver units against FPV attack drones, swarm tactics, and low-cost reconnaissance UAVs.
Regional relevance
The global spread of the drone threat is pushing not just the US but all NATO member states toward similar layered C-UAS architectures. As Türkiye develops its own indigenous C-UAS and electronic warfare systems, AeroVironment’s large-scale award adds to ongoing discussions among allies on technology and doctrine sharing.
What’s next
Initial task orders under the contract are expected in the coming months. AeroVironment shares drew investor interest following the announcement, with analysts expecting the framework agreement to accelerate the company’s growth in the C-UAS market through 2029.
