Steel Dome vs Iron Dome: Comparing Two Very Different Air-Defense Architectures

Two names keep getting mentioned in the same breath: Turkey’s Steel Dome (Çelik Kubbe) and Israel’s Iron Dome. The similar branding invites the assumption that they are equivalents. Architecturally, they are very different things.
Iron Dome is a single-mission point-defense system; Steel Dome is a layered network that fuses many systems under one brain. To see the difference clearly, we opened both up.

One System vs a Network
Iron Dome was built to solve a narrow, well-defined problem: stopping a barrage of short-range rockets and artillery. At that job its radar and Tamir interceptor are highly effective. But by nature it is short-range and single-layer; for long-range ballistic or high-altitude threats Israel relies on separate systems like David’s Sling and Arrow.
Steel Dome is a different idea entirely: not one interceptor but dozens of systems — from KORKUT to HİSAR to SİPER and electronic-warfare and counter-drone layers — talking through a single command-and-control brain. In other words, Steel Dome contains the work Iron Dome does as merely one of its layers.
Head-to-Head Specifications
| Specification | Steel Dome (Turkey) | Iron Dome (Israel) |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Layered integrated network | Single-layer point defense |
| Coverage | Short + medium + long range | Short range (~4–70 km) |
| Components | KORKUT, HİSAR, SİPER, GÖKER… | Tamir radar + Tamir missile |
| Targets | Drones, missiles, aircraft, ballistic | Rockets, artillery, short missiles |
| Brain | Single command & control (Aselsan) | Battery-level |
| Maker | Multi-firm national ecosystem | Rafael / Israel |
| Philosophy | System of systems | Best answer to one problem |

Why It Isn’t a Like-for-Like Comparison
So ‘Steel Dome vs Iron Dome’ is technically closer to ‘an orchestra vs a soloist.’ Iron Dome is a master of one instrument and has been tested in combat many times. Steel Dome puts every instrument under one conductor — far broader in scope, though still maturing toward full readiness.
The Verdict
If the question is ‘which is proven at stopping short-range rockets,’ Iron Dome’s field record is clear. But that compares apples to oranges: Iron Dome owns a narrow mission, while Steel Dome aims to defend an entire national sky in multiple layers.
The right frame is this: Steel Dome is a far broader architecture that contains ‘its own Iron Dome’ inside it. Turkey’s goal is to manage the whole drone–missile–aircraft–ballistic spectrum with one brain. Coverage favors Turkey; maturity will come with time.
