Bayraktar AKINCI vs MQ-9 Reaper vs CH-5: The HALE Combat UAV Comparison

Bayraktar AKINCI vs MQ-9 Reaper vs CH-5: The HALE Combat UAV Comparison
The TB2 made Türkiye a UAV power. The Bayraktar AKINCI moved the country into the high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) class previously dominated by the MQ-9 Reaper and China’s CH-5. For buyers who need longer endurance, heavier payload and air-to-air carriage, this is the comparison that matters.

What AKINCI Brings That The Others Do Not
AKINCI is the first export-available combat UAV cleared to carry the SOM cruise missile — a 250 km stand-off weapon — and Turkish air-to-air missiles (Bozdoğan, Gökdoğan). That makes it the first armed drone with credible air-to-air engagement capability available to export buyers.
The twin-engine layout also improves survivability over single-engine HALE platforms in operational profiles where engine loss over hostile territory has been a recurring loss mode for the MQ-9.
Where MQ-9 Remains Ahead
Sensor fusion, certified airworthiness in civilian airspace and decades of operational data. The U.S. Air Force, RAF and other operators have refined Reaper tactics across two decades of combat. AKINCI is newer; its combat-proven catalogue grows but does not yet match.
CH-5 — The Budget HALE
The CH-5 emphasises endurance and price. Its claimed 60-hour mission is impressive, but its reported payload and ceiling lag both AKINCI and Reaper. For long-duration surveillance over permissive airspace, it is competitive. For contested airspace and heavy stand-off munitions, AKINCI and Reaper are the serious choices.

Verdict for Export Buyers
MQ-9 if you can get it. CH-5 if cost-per-flight-hour for surveillance is the only metric. AKINCI if you want HALE combat capability with stand-off munitions, air-to-air carriage and an export path that is open today.
