The US Navy has awarded General Dynamics a new contract modification for MEDUSA, an expendable unmanned submarine that launches from a torpedo tube and lays mines far from the host boat.

The US Navy has awarded General Dynamics Mission Systems a roughly $14 million contract modification for MEDUSA, an expendable unmanned underwater vehicle that launches from a submarine’s torpedo tube and travels on its own to lay mines. Announced by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) on 6 July, the modification covers prototype systems, software development and shore support equipment.

MEDUSA stands for Mining Expendable Delivery Unmanned Submarine Asset. Roughly the size of a torpedo, it is fired from the host submarine’s own tube and then transits independently to release its mine payload well away from the launching boat.

Laying mines without exposing the boat

Traditional submarine minelaying requires the boat itself to approach the minefield, exposing it to detection and engagement. MEDUSA offloads that task, keeping the host submarine at a safe distance from contested waters. Designed to be expendable, the vehicle does not return; it settles on the seabed once its mission is complete.

The approach moves undersea mine warfare toward an uncrewed, low-cost architecture. By effectively extending the submarine’s reach, it allows minefields to be laid closer to hostile shores with less risk.

Programme timeline

The initial award to General Dynamics was worth about $16 million and covered programme management, design, systems engineering, fabrication, testing and integration. If extended to 2032, the total could reach $58 million. Work added under the latest modification is expected to run through 2028, performed in Massachusetts.

A trend in undersea mine warfare

MEDUSA reflects a wider drive among major navies to modernise undersea mine capability with uncrewed systems. Mine warfare remains a low-cost tool for controlling sea areas and chokepoints. An autonomous minelayer fired from a torpedo tube widens the mission set of conventional submarines while lowering engagement risk, and rising interest in uncrewed undersea systems suggests more such programmes ahead.
