Arthur Weapon Locating Radar: Saab’s Counter-Battery System

Arthur — Artillery Hunting Radar — is Saab’s vehicle-mounted weapon-locating system. By intercepting an incoming projectile at the mid-point of its ballistic trajectory and back-calculating from multiple range-gate measurements, Arthur determines the firing position of enemy artillery, mortars and rocket systems to a range exceeding 40 km. In Ukraine, Arthur has provided the counter-battery data that has allowed Ukrainian artillery to destroy Russian firing positions with exceptional speed and precision.

How Arthur Works
Arthur detects a projectile at the ascending or descending phase of its trajectory, tracks it across multiple radar range gates and applies ballistic modelling in real time. The back-calculated firing position is accurate enough to cue return fire within seconds of the enemy’s initial discharge. The system can track multiple simultaneous threats from different bearings, meaning a complex barrage creates no “queue” of unprocessed data. The vehicle-mounted configuration allows Arthur to change position in minutes — essential to avoid counter-radar artillery targeting.
Ukraine Combat Use
Several NATO allies — Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany — transferred Arthur systems to Ukraine following Russia’s February 2022 invasion. Field reporting and Ukrainian military statements confirm that Arthur significantly enhanced the precision and speed of Ukrainian counter-battery operations, contributing to attrition of Russian self-propelled artillery at a rate that exceeded Russian replacement capacity in certain sectors.
