Lockheed Martin downs attack drone with missile fired from a shipping container

Lockheed Martin has demonstrated a low-cost counter-drone capability, destroying a one-way attack drone with a missile launched from a hidden-in-plain-sight shipping container.
In a test the company disclosed around 3 June 2026, a container-based launcher named “GRIZZLY” — built into a standard roughly 3-metre (10-foot) shipping container — fired a Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) that intercepted and destroyed the incoming attack drone in flight.
JAGM was originally developed to be fired from helicopters and unmanned aircraft against armoured targets. The demonstration showed the missile can also be launched from the ground, and from an unremarkable container platform at that. Containerised launchers can be tucked into ports, onto truck beds or at fixed sites, offering the advantage of hiding in plain sight.
Why it matters: As cheap attack drones become one of the most common threats on the modern battlefield, spending million-dollar air-defence interceptors to knock them down is not sustainable. Containerised, distributed and comparatively inexpensive launchers are gaining ground in the fast-growing counter-UAS (C-UAS) field thanks to flexible placement and better cost trade-offs.
Lockheed Martin’s test suggests such systems, assembled largely from existing components, could be fielded quickly. The container architecture also lets the system be moved easily onto commercial trucks or vessels.
