The drone war changed short-range air defence forever. Korkut is Türkiye’s twin 35 mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun designed against helicopters, low-flying aircraft and — increasingly — UAVs. Phalanx and Pantsir-S1 compete for the same mission with different design philosophies.

The Different Design Philosophies

Phalanx is a naval close-in weapon system — a last-ditch defensive autocannon designed to shred incoming anti-ship missiles in the final seconds. Land-based Centurion C-RAM uses the same gun mount for counter-rocket, artillery and mortar defence.

Pantsir-S1 combines a 30 mm twin gun with surface-to-air missiles on a single chassis, with its own radar and command-and-control. It is closer to an integrated SHORAD battery than a pure CIWS.

Korkut sits in between — a mobile twin 35 mm SPAAG with the option to network with separate Atılgan and Zıpkın missile launchers and Sungur-equipped vehicles. The choice gives buyers flexibility over Pantsir’s all-in-one approach.

The Drone Defence Reality

All three systems have been measured against the same threat in 2022-2024: Iranian-Russian Shahed-136 loitering munitions, smaller commercial-derivative quad-copters and tactical UAVs. Phalanx and C-RAM have engaged drones in the Red Sea and Iraq with mixed results. Pantsir has engaged hundreds in Ukraine, also mixed. Korkut has been tested against drone targets in Türkiye and operates against PKK UAV threats domestically.

The lesson from all three: gun-based SHORAD remains relevant against the drone threat — but radar-cued target acquisition, ammunition optimised for fragmenting against thin targets and rapid traversing are what determines hit rate. Modern Korkut variants increasingly emphasise these capabilities.

Export Profile

Korkut: domestic plus active export marketing to Gulf and Asian buyers. Phalanx / Centurion: standard fit on U.S. Navy ships and on multiple allied navies; land-based exports more selective. Pantsir-S1: widely exported but increasingly sanctions-constrained.

Verdict for Export Buyers

Phalanx / Centurion if you need a proven naval CIWS or U.S.-supplied land defence. Pantsir-S1 if Russian alignment is acceptable. Korkut if you want a mobile twin-35 mm SHORAD that integrates with Atılgan / Zıpkın / Sungur to give layered short-range coverage against drones, helicopters and low-flying aircraft from a single supplier.
