FREMM (Frégate Multi-Missions) is a multi-mission frigate jointly developed by Naval Group and Italy’s Fincantieri under a 2002 inter-governmental agreement. Designated Aquitaine class in France and Carlo Bergamini class in Italy, the platform integrates anti-submarine warfare (ASW), area air defense (AAW), land-attack cruise missile strike, and special operations in a single 6,000-tonne hull. With over 20 units ordered across France, Italy, Morocco and Greece, FREMM stands as Europe’s most capable conventionally-powered surface combatant built in the 21st century.

MDCN Cruise Missile — Strategic Land-Attack Capability

FREMM’s most strategically significant weapon is the MBDA MDCN (naval Scalp/Storm Shadow variant) with a 1,000 km range. France is one of the very few non-US nations with a ship-launched long-range cruise missile. The MDCN was first used in combat during Operation Chammal against ISIL targets in Syria (2015), launched from FREMM Provence.

Combat Record

Syria (2015): FREMM Provence and Languedoc fired MDCN cruise missiles against ISIL targets — the first operational use of naval cruise missiles by the French Navy.

Red Sea (2023-24): FREMM Provence deployed against Houthi UAV and surface drone threats, providing real-world validation of the platform’s air defense systems.

Turkish Equivalent

Turkey’s İstanbul F-515-class frigate (~3,300 tonnes) represents the current domestic answer, with a planned higher-end response via the TF-2000 destroyer program (10,000+ tonnes, 128-cell VLS target). Full FREMM equivalence depends on the maturation of the SİPER-Deniz naval air defense system and the ROKETSAN AKYA torpedo program.

Envanter Media Assessment

FREMM’s combination of acoustic stealth, MDCN cruise missile capability and modular configurability makes it Europe’s most strategically versatile frigate. The platform’s combat use in Syria and the Red Sea provides rare operational validation that few European warship programs can match. Naval Group’s ability to sell FREMM derivatives to Morocco and Greece — strategic partners in different geopolitical contexts — demonstrates the platform’s diplomatic flexibility alongside its military value.
