US Air Force awards Boeing first production contract for 300-mile JDAM LR

The U.S. Air Force has cleared Boeing to begin initial production of its long-range precision strike munition, awarding a contract action valued at $75 million. According to Boeing’s official statement released on 5 August, the award covers the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit for the GBU-75 Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range, and opens the transition from testing to manufacturing.

The award takes the form of an Undefinitized Contract Action, a mechanism that allows work to start before final pricing is negotiated. Neither the number of units to be produced nor a fielding schedule was disclosed in the announcement.

What separates JDAM LR from a standard JDAM

JDAM is a tail kit that converts unguided bombs into GPS- and inertially guided precision weapons. JDAM LR keeps that tail kit and the associated aircraft interface, then adds a wing kit and a compact turbojet engine — turning a glide weapon into a powered one.

According to Boeing’s published product data, the weapon carries a 500-pound-class warhead beyond 300 nautical miles, roughly 555 kilometres, using military-code GPS navigation. The airframe is built around a standard MK 82 bomb body. Open sources report that the propulsion unit is a compact Kratos turbojet; that detail does not appear in the manufacturer’s official material and should be treated with caution.

The cost argument

Affordability sits at the centre of the programme’s pitch. Instead of a clean-sheet cruise missile, JDAM LR combines three items already produced at volume: the MK 82 bomb body, the JDAM guidance tail kit and the existing aircraft interface. Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems, described the award as a milestone that demonstrates the ability to deliver long-range precision strike “at a significantly lower cost”.

Integration is the second saving. Any aircraft already cleared to carry conventional JDAM can, according to the manufacturer, carry JDAM LR with limited modification — reducing the need for separate weapon integration programmes on the F-15E, F-16, B-1B and B-52. Qualification and aircraft integration work is still under way, and Boeing is standing up manufacturing space at its St. Charles, Missouri facility in parallel.

From flight test to the factory floor

The programme cleared a significant hurdle in the spring. Following flight tests conducted in the first days of April, Defense News reported on 21 April that the U.S. Navy had successfully engaged targets with the winged JDAM out to 200 miles. Open sources also indicate Boeing invested close to $100 million of its own funds ahead of any formal order.

The weapon is not limited to land attack. Naval News reported in February that Boeing had shown anti-ship and aerial mining configurations of JDAM LR. The ability to sow mines from a bomber without entering a defended area is widely seen as a priority requirement in Pacific planning.

Why it matters

Recent fighting in Ukraine and the Middle East has underlined how dense modern air defence networks have become, making close-in delivery increasingly costly. Captain Sarah Abbott, the precision strike weapons programme manager, said the weapon lets aircrews engage targets from significantly safer distances.

Magazine depth is the other driver. High-end cruise missiles are produced in limited numbers and can be exhausted quickly in a sustained campaign. A standoff weapon riding on existing production lines is easier to scale in a crisis. How large the cost advantage actually proves to be will only become clear once the contract is definitized and production quantities are announced.

Regional context

The design logic behind JDAM LR is directly comparable to work under way elsewhere. Türkiye’s TÜBİTAK SAGE developed the Wing Assisted Guidance Kit (KGK) along similar lines, adding wings and guidance to a standard bomb body; open sources cite a range in the region of 100 kilometres. Türkiye’s powered standoff answer, the SOM cruise missile, is a separate purpose-built platform.

Compared with systems in the same class, JDAM LR differentiates itself by aiming to fill the gap between glide kits and cruise missiles while converting existing bomb stocks. For manufacturers competing in the long-range precision strike market, it signals that cost per round and production volume are becoming as decisive as range.
