BAE Systems announced on 22 July 2026 that it had won a 708 million pound contract extension from the UK Ministry of Defence to continue UK work under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The deal covers the development of sixth-generation combat air capabilities.

The extension covers technology integration, software development, digital networks and engineering, infrastructure, operational analysis and concept development. Uncrewed air systems, advanced networks and weapon technologies are also in scope.

Team Tempest and Workforce

The UK arm of GCAP runs through the Team Tempest partnership, with BAE Systems as lead system integrator: Leonardo UK, MBDA UK, Rolls-Royce and the UK MoD. About 4,500 people work on future combat air capabilities.

Declan Holland, Managing Director of Future Combat Air Systems at BAE Systems Air, said: ‘Through this work, we’re delivering tangible outcomes for GCAP by strengthening UK capability.’

A Digital-Engineering Focus

The programme emphasizes digital engineering tools such as model-based systems engineering, open architectures, digital twins and virtual environments, aiming for faster, more cost-effective delivery than previous programs.

GCAP is the sixth-generation fighter initiative run jointly by the UK, Italy and Japan. Canada recently joined the programme as an ‘observer.’

Why It Matters

The sixth-generation fighter race will shape air superiority in the 2030s. GCAP’s progress builds an industrial axis linking Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Turkey’s KAAN program competes in the same generation, so GCAP’s steps are watched closely.
