Israel Validates Laser Integration Into Iron Dome Air Defense System

Israel’s Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), together with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, announced on June 30, 2026 that trials had validated next-generation upgrades to the Iron Dome air defense system, including software, sensor and command-and-control improvements alongside integration of the Iron Beam high-energy laser weapon with existing kinetic interceptors.

According to the announcement, the upgraded architecture can detect, classify and engage multiple simultaneous targets — rockets, cruise missiles and drones — with improved resilience during saturation attacks. The Tamir interceptor engages threats at ranges of 4-70 kilometers, extending to roughly 100 kilometers against certain air-breathing targets. Each battery comprises an EL/M-2084 S-band radar, a battle management center and three to four launchers carrying up to 20 missiles.

The most notable element of the trials was demonstrating that kinetic and directed-energy interceptors can be coordinated through a single Iron Dome Battle Management Center, described as one of the first operational integrations of a high-energy laser into an existing layered air defense architecture anywhere in the world.

Iron Dome has been operational since 2011 and is credited with intercepting thousands of threats across multiple conflicts. Adding a laser layer is intended to reduce the cost-per-engagement against low-cost drone and rocket saturation tactics that have become increasingly common in regional conflicts. For NATO and regional air-defense planners, the shift toward hybrid kinetic-directed-energy battle management illustrates where multilayer defense architectures are heading next.
