- Rheinmetall targets a North American procurement first
What happened
Rheinmetall unveiled the new GMF 140 guided-missile frigate on 3 August 2026. Displacing about 6,000 tonnes at 140 meters long, it is the company's first large surface platform pitched to an international navy tender.
The company said it intends to offer the ship first within a North American procurement project and then market it to allied navies in Europe, the North Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific. Rheinmetall did not name the program.
Systems and armament
The GMF 140 combines an Aegis-centered combat architecture with 64 Strike-Length vertical-launch cells. That fit delivers area air defense, ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare and land-attack capability in a single hull.
The weapons package includes anti-ship missiles, torpedo launchers, a 5-inch gun, a close-in weapon system, a laser weapon and decoy launchers. The ship reaches 30 knots, with a standard crew of 90 and accommodation for 35 more.
Market and competition
Rheinmetall is traditionally known for land systems and ammunition; entering the large surface-combatant market puts it in direct competition with established European shipbuilders. Aegis integration appeals especially to navies such as the US and Canada that already operate the system.
The GMF 140 positions itself as an option for navies seeking a multi-role frigate in a single hull during the current modernization wave.
Why It Matters
Turkey competes in the multi-role surface market with its MILGEM and I-class frigates. Rheinmetall's entry signals intensifying global competition in the mid-size frigate segment.
With Aegis and 64 VLS cells, the GMF 140 promises near-destroyer firepower in a frigate hull.
Frequently Asked Questions
