MSB: Turkish Pilots Are Going to the UK for Eurofighter Typhoon Training in August

The Ministry of National Defense announced that it is planned to send flight personnel to the UK in August 2026 to begin flight training as part of the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement.

Details of the Development

According to the Ministry of National Defense’s statement, flight and maintenance personnel will continue to be sent to the UK over the years under the signed contract. In the first phase, flight personnel will go to the UK in August 2026, and flight training will begin shortly thereafter. It is anticipated that the Royal Air Force (RAF) will provide training for 10 Turkish instructor pilots and approximately 100 maintenance trainers.

The ministry announced that the delivery of aircraft to be received from the UK will begin in 2030. According to the delivery schedule, a total of 20 Eurofighter Typhoons will be delivered to Turkey, with 6 in 2030, 8 in 2031, and 6 in 2032.

Context of the System and Process

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multi-role, 4.5 generation combat aircraft jointly produced by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Turkey’s procurement process progressed after a long diplomatic negotiation; the stance of the consortium partner Germany during the approval process had been decisive for a long time. The fact that the process has reached the training phase for flight and maintenance personnel indicates that the procurement has entered a concrete implementation phase.

The Typhoon is expected to fill a mid-upper segment capability gap alongside the F-16 fleet in the Turkish Air Force’s inventory. The aircraft’s capability to carry Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles provides Turkey with a range advantage in air superiority missions.

Regional and Strategic Significance

The procurement of the Eurofighter is a step that bridges Turkey’s air power modernization until the domestic KAAN fighter aircraft enters service. During the period until the serial production of the fifth-generation KAAN, the Typhoon will help maintain fleet strength alongside F-16 modernization (Özgür) and new procurements. Additionally, the training of Typhoon pilots will create an institutional flight and maintenance experience that will also be used in the future transition to KAAN. The procurement of a NATO platform is also significant in terms of interoperability with allies.
