MBDA Aster 15 / PAAMS: Why Europe’s Destroyers All Fire the Same Missile

Six British Type 45 destroyers. Four French and Italian Horizon frigates. Eighteen-plus FREMM frigates across France, Italy, and Morocco. The PIF stage reduces engagement completion time by approximately 0.3 seconds at close range — a difference that is decisive against a Mach 2+ incoming threat.

Aster 15 operates within the PAAMS (Principal Anti-Air Missile System) architecture — an integrated system combining missile, launcher, fire control, and sensor:

• UK Type 45: SAMPSON multi-function AESA radar (360° active electronic scanning) + Aster 15/30 in 48 Sylver A50 cells
• French/Italian Horizon: EMPAR G-band phased array + Aster 15/30 in Sylver A43/50 cells
• FREMM: EMPAR (or HERAKLES) + 16 Sylver A43 cells with Aster 15

The battle management system tracks multiple simultaneous tracks, prioritises and allocates missiles, and supports engagement of multiple concurrent threats — a capability demonstrated during exercise scenarios where PAAMS-equipped ships engaged coordinated multi-threat scenarios.

Morocco’s Mohammed V class FREMM frigates (delivered 2022) mark the first export of Aster-equipped naval platforms to an Arab nation. This deployment has two significances: it validates France’s willingness to transfer its most capable naval air defence technology to a North African partner; and it creates an Aster 15 operator in the Mediterranean’s southern shore — a precedent for future discussions with other regional navies.
