Nearly 3,000 Canadian-Made Senators in Ukraine as Roshel Vehicle Enters War Museum
Show Article Summary

Canadian armoured vehicle maker Roshel says nearly 3,000 Senator vehicles have gone to Ukraine since 2022. The statement followed the Canadian War Museum’s addition of a Roshel Senator MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected) vehicle to its national military collection in Ottawa. In its 28 October 2026 announcement, the museum put deliveries to Ukraine at “more than 2,700”. Neither gave an exact number or said how many vehicles were paid for by Canada, Ukraine or other countries.

On permanent display

According to the museum, the vehicle was donated by Roshel, based in Brampton, Ontario. Built on a Ford F-550 chassis, it was one of the first Senators to come off the production line in 2023. It arrived directly from Roshel’s plant in summer 2026, took part in demonstrations at the museum’s annual War Machines Weekend and is now on view in the LeBreton Gallery.

The Canadian Press reported that the museum wanted a piece of equipment with a service history in Ukraine, but because the Ukrainian government would not release equipment used in the war, it acquired a vehicle fresh off the assembly line.

James Whitham, Director General of the Canadian War Museum, said the Senator MRAP “adds a contemporary example of Canadian defence technology to the Museum’s military vehicle collection.” Roshel CEO Roman Shimonov said: “Every Senator we build embodies the skill and determination of the Canadians who build it.”

Company figures cited by Ukraine’s Defense Express show about 700 vehicles delivered between May 2025 and May 2026. Vehicles arrive through Canadian aid packages, aid from other countries and Ukraine’s own purchases. Ukraine’s Armed Forces and Border Guard use them for troop transport, casualty evacuation, patrol and reconnaissance.

Canada’s orders

In January 2023 Canada approved 200 Senators for Ukraine worth CAD 90 million. On 24 February 2026, the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ottawa announced 383 Senators and 66 LAV 6 vehicles built by General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada, and extended Operation UNIFIER to 2029. The 383 Senators comprise 100 ambulances, 82 command vehicles and 201 personnel carriers; Roshel’s CEO said in October that all had been delivered ahead of schedule.

The vehicle

The Senator is based on the commercial Ford F-550 heavy-duty truck chassis, which allows faster and cheaper production than purpose-built military platforms. The MRAP version has a V-shaped hull to deflect blasts and carries up to 10 personnel. Company data put protection at NATO STANAG 4569 Level 2 against ballistic threats and Level 3 against mines (8 kg TNT equivalent).

Roshel was founded in Ontario in 2016 and introduced the Senator family in 2018. It is also winning customers beyond Ukraine: Moldova is buying more than 100 Roshel vehicles with EU European Peace Facility funding.

Note

This report is based on the Canadian War Museum’s 28 October 2026 press release, the Canadian Press report of the same day and Roshel’s social media post; the delivery timeline comes from company figures cited by Defense Express. “Nearly 3,000” is the company’s figure; the museum’s official release says more than 2,700.
