Two flagship HALE UCAVs, two philosophies

The Bayraktar AKINCI (Baykar, Türkiye) and the MQ-9B SkyGuardian (General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, USA) sit at the top tier of today’s export-relevant heavy unmanned combat aerial systems. Both carry beyond line-of-sight satellite links, both operate above 40,000 ft, and both can spend more than 24 hours aloft over an area of interest. Their design philosophies, however, are markedly different.

AKINCI is a twin-engine, indigenous-munitions-first platform. It first flew in December 2019, entered Turkish Armed Forces service in 2021, and holds the world endurance record for its class (25 hours 46 minutes, 2022). SkyGuardian is a single-engine, STANAG 4671-certified aircraft designed to operate inside NATO civil airspace and to inherit the operational maturity of two-plus million flight hours accumulated across the wider MQ-9 family.

Why compare them now?

Since 2023, both platforms have shown up in the same procurement conversations across Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco and Nigeria. The delta between them — one sold at roughly a third of the other’s per-unit price with rapid delivery, the other with allied intelligence-fusion pedigree and long-term sustainment — increasingly defines how emerging air forces build modern ISR-strike capacity.

Design philosophy

The twin-engine AKINCI trades some cruise economy for engine-out safety, an argument that matters when you loiter for a day over disputed airspace. GA-ASI took the opposite bet with SkyGuardian: a single high-efficiency Honeywell TPE331-10 driving a very high aspect-ratio 24 m wing, which pushes endurance beyond 40 hours and range beyond 5,000 nautical miles. In an ISR-heavy mission, that translates to fewer sorties for the same area coverage. In a strike-heavy mission, it translates to fewer aircraft in the launch cycle.

Weapons integration

AKINCI carries an unusually deep indigenous munitions catalogue: Roketsan MAM-L / MAM-C / MAM-T, Cirit laser-guided rocket, L-UMTAS anti-tank missile, TÜBITAK-SAGE SOM-A cruise missile, Bozok guided bomb family, HGK-3 satellite-guided kits, and MK-81/82/83 general-purpose bombs. Uniquely for its class, AKINCI has been tested with Bozdoğan (WVR) and Gökdoğan (BVR) air-to-air missiles — a capability neither MQ-9A nor MQ-9B currently fields in operational form.

MQ-9B SkyGuardian inherits the mature MQ-9 weapons envelope: AGM-114 Hellfire, GBU-12 / 38 / 49 / 54 Paveway/JDAM families, Brimstone in the UK Protector RG Mk1, and the upcoming Eagle long-range strike package developed by GA-ASI. Air-to-air is a stated goal — Stinger and podded munitions have been trialled — but no service-integrated A2A round exists today.

Sensors

AKINCI ships with an ASELSAN CATS multi-mode EO/IR turret, MURAD SAR/GMTI, MİLDAR AESA, ELINT/COMINT packages and SATCOM as standard. Baykar does not publish list prices for AKINCI. Open-source estimates put a full system (airframe + ground control + support package) between USD 25-40 million. The Saudi Arabia deal, signed in 2023 and including local production via SAMI, has been reported at around USD 3 billion total value.
