Bayraktar TB3: The Carrier-Capable Drone Built for TCG Anadolu, Explained

When the Turkish Navy commissioned its biggest warship, TCG Anadolu, in 2023, it had a 230-metre flight deck and almost nothing to put on it. The amphibious assault ship had been ordered with American F-35B short-take-off jets in mind. Washington then pushed Turkey out of the F-35 programme, and Ankara was left holding a flat-top with no fast jets to fly off it. The fix did not come from another foreign supplier. It came from a 1.6-tonne drone with folding wings, built in a hangar outside Istanbul: the Bayraktar TB3.
TB3 is the most ambitious aircraft Baykar has ever attempted. Operating from a ship is nothing like operating from a runway — the deck is short, it pitches and rolls, salt corrodes everything, and a missed landing ends in the sea. TB3 was designed to handle all of that with no pilot at any stage of the flight: the take-off, the cruise, the strike, the recovery — fully autonomous. Underneath the wings, it carries Turkish-built precision munitions: ROKETSAN’s MAM family, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s BOZOK laser-guided bomb, small cruise missiles and, soon, mini smart bombs.
The single most distinctive feature is something you will not see on any other Turkish UAV: the 14-metre wings fold in half at the joint. Park enough of them with the wings tucked in and a row of TB3s fits side-by-side inside the narrow hangar of an amphibious ship. That one design choice is what makes shipboard operations possible in the first place.
At a Glance
Translated into everyday terms: once airborne, the TB3 can stay up for more than a full day and night without landing. It carries about 280 kilos of weapons — roughly the mass of three adults. Its ceiling of 7.6 km is half the cruising altitude of a passenger jet. Its top speed of 220–240 km/h is the pace of a fast car on the motorway.
What TB3 Actually Does
The Historic Take-Off: 19 November 2023
On 19 November 2023, TB3 lifted off the deck of TCG Anadolu under its own software for the first time. That single flight marked a point on the timeline of Turkish aviation: the first Turkish aircraft ever to launch and recover autonomously from a ship. The clip Selçuk Bayraktar published of the flight went well beyond Turkish defence circles, because the broader concept — an armed unmanned aircraft flying off a flat-top — is novel internationally too, not only domestically.
Since then, TB3 has completed dozens of test flights, including live munitions drops and night carrier operations. It is now entering serial production for the Turkish Armed Forces.

Two Variants
TB3 comes in two flavours. The land variant is best understood as a bigger, stronger sibling of the Bayraktar TB2: same fundamental layout, longer endurance, more weapons stations, classical runway take-off. The naval variant is the one tailored for the carrier mission — folding wings, an arrestor hook on the tail to stop on the short deck, and an airframe treated against salt-water corrosion. Both versions carry the same Turkish munitions: ROKETSAN’s MAM-L and MAM-C, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s BOZOK laser-guided bomb, small cruise missiles, and a growing family of mini smart bombs.
Why It Matters for Turkey
TB3 is not just a new aircraft. It is the operational answer to the F-35 problem. When Washington removed Turkey from the F-35 programme, TCG Anadolu was widely expected to spend its career as a helicopter carrier. With TB3, the ship gets its own fixed-wing aircraft back — unmanned, but armed.
Looking further ahead, Turkey’s planned full-size aircraft carrier MUGEM is expected to be designed around TB3 and KIZILELMA as the central air wing. That puts Turkey on a path no NATO navy has walked before: a flat-top operating exclusively unmanned combat aircraft over the open sea. Whether or not MUGEM ends up looking exactly as currently briefed, TB3 is the airframe that proves the concept first.
The last piece is the supply chain. TB3 is overwhelmingly Turkish — the engine is TEI, the munitions are ROKETSAN and TÜBİTAK SAGE, the electronics are ASELSAN, and the airframe and flight software are Baykar. It is, in effect, the Turkish defence industry sitting on a single deck.
