BAE Systems Unveils Brontanax, the UK’s First Autonomous Combat Aircraft
BAE Systems has unveiled Brontanax, described as the United Kingdom’s first autonomous combat aircraft, at the Farnborough International Airshow. The uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) is designed to operate alongside the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fighters. According to Defence Industry Europe’s July 22 report, the prototype was built at the company’s Warton site in Lancashire and is being prepared for ground testing.
First tangible product of StormFighter
Brontanax is being developed under the UK’s StormFighter programme, backed by £300 million through the Defence Investment Plan. Development began with BAE Systems’ own research funding, and the project now involves more than 500 company employees along with over 75 large companies and SMEs. The design was led by FalconWorks, BAE Systems’ advanced projects division.
Roughly the size of the company’s Hawk trainer, Brontanax will take on electronic warfare and precision strike missions against both airborne and ground targets. Its open architecture and modular design are intended to allow new mission payloads over time.
First flight targeted for 2027
Following ground trials at Warton, flight testing will move into UK airspace. The prototype is expected to fly in 2027, with service entry planned before the end of the decade. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stressed the aircraft was “built in Britain,” saying the UK has the skills to lead in combat air power, while Air Marshal Sir Harv Smyth said the RAF is determined to become “Europe’s first 6th Generation Air Force.”
Europe joins the CCA race
The loyal-wingman segment has become one of the busiest areas of the global defense industry. In the United States, the YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A prototypes are advancing through flight testing, while Boeing’s MQ-28 Ghost Bat is courting the German market. With Brontanax, the UK enters the race with a national solution of its own — joining the small group of countries, including Turkiye with its ANKA-3 and Kizilelma, that have flown combat drones in this class.
