Babcock Completes Delivery of 123 Jackal 3 Vehicles to the British Army

Babcock, working with defence engineering firm Supacat, has completed delivery of 123 Jackal 3 and Jackal 3 Extenda vehicles for the British Army. The final vehicle in the program rolled off the production line at the Devonport site in Plymouth and will undergo testing before joining the operational fleet.

What the program covered

The completed program ran in two tranches. Babcock and Supacat first delivered 70 standard four-wheeled Jackal 3 vehicles, then shifted production to 53 six-wheeled Extenda variants. The Extenda adds a third axle for greater payload and range. The last vehicle off the line was Supacat’s six-wheeled Extenda.

What Jackal 3 does

The Jackal family is a high-mobility, open-topped reconnaissance and patrol vehicle. It operates across terrain from desert to rough country and is equally suited to reconnaissance, patrol and logistics tasks. Jackal 3 brings a more powerful engine, improved protection and updated running gear over earlier versions, and is described as one of the most versatile platforms in its class in British Army service.

Why it matters

Completing the delivery is a milestone in the UK’s renewal of its high-mobility reconnaissance fleet. Continuity of European land-vehicle production lines has become a strategic issue again after the war in Ukraine, and delivering orders on time matters in a period when industrial capacity is under strain. Running the program in two tranches with Supacat, a domestic SME, also reflects the UK’s approach to protecting its defence industrial base.

The vulnerability of light, fast, open-topped vehicles to drone threats in modern combat is under debate, but the freedom of movement they provide in reconnaissance, patrol and special-forces tasks keeps the class relevant. Turkey holds a strong export portfolio in the same segment with its tactical wheeled family, including Kirpi, Cobra and NMS.
