The JF-17 Thunder – Chinese designation FC-1 Xiaolong – is a joint Pakistani-Chinese single-engine, single-seat, lightweight 4.5-generation combat aircraft developed by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) in Kamra and the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC). First flown in 2003 and entering Pakistan Air Force service in 2007, the JF-17 was designed as an affordable replacement for Pakistan’s aging Mirage III, Mirage 5 and F-7 fleets. The Block III upgrade’s headline feature is the KLJ-7A active electronically scanned array radar developed by China’s Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology (NRIET). The radar has approximately 1,000 transmit-receive modules – more than the F-16V’s AN/APG-83 (1,000 T/R) and approximately twice that of the Saab Gripen’s Raven ES-05. Detection range against a 5 m² target is publicly stated as 170 km. Combined with the PL-15E missile (145 km range), JF-17 Block III gives PAF a credible BVR engagement envelope against Indian Su-30MKI and Tejas Mk 1A.

The JF-17 is the most affordable 4.5-generation fighter on the global market – at approximately USD 25 million per aircraft, it offers Block III AESA capability at one-third the cost of an F-16C Block 70. For air forces in Africa, Asia and Latin America that cannot afford or politically cannot acquire Western fighters, the JF-17 has become the default option.
