U.S. Army signs deal worth up to $500M with cheap-FPV maker Neros

Southern California startup Neros has signed a framework contract worth up to $500 million with the U.S. Army for its Archer FPV attack drones.

Founded in 2023 by Olaf Hichwa and Soren Monroe-Anderson, Neros signed an indefinite-delivery (IDIQ) U.S. Army contract to supply low-cost first-person-view (FPV) attack drones. The ceiling value is $500 million.
The company’s Archer drone streams live video to the operator before striking a target. Neros estimates each Archer costs about $2,000, with a fully equipped system — warhead and components included — running to roughly $5,000.

Production scale and Army goal
Neros is building 1,200 drones a week at its Southern California facility and says it has a plan to reach one million a year by 2028. The contract aligns with the Army’s aim to grow annual drone procurement from roughly 50,000 to more than one million over the next several years.
The IDIQ structure gives the Army flexibility up to the ceiling: the $500 million figure is a maximum for future orders, not a guaranteed amount.
Breaking the China dependence
The award is part of the Pentagon’s push to reduce reliance on Chinese-made technology in the commercial drone market. DJI long dominated the FPV space; recent federal restrictions have accelerated demand for American-made alternatives.
Neros’ rise illustrates the growing weight of ‘garage-to-Pentagon’ new entrants in defense procurement. The company also announced a fresh $75 million funding round.
Regional and strategic meaning
The U.S. Army’s goal of raising annual drone buys from 50,000 to more than a million shows unmanned systems are now treated as a core combat element. FPV tactics matured on the Ukrainian battlefield are being turned into institutional doctrine by large armies. This marks a shift from ‘a few expensive platforms’ toward ‘many cheap, expendable systems.’
It is a familiar trend for Turkey too: the indigenous UAV and loitering-munition ecosystem sits inside this global demand wave, both for exports and for stockpile depth. Western policy aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese-made commercial drone technology opens new markets and cooperation opportunities for alternative producer nations.
