U.S. Army Taps AeroVironment for Counter-Drone Systems in Deal Worth Up to $500 Million

The U.S. Army has turned to AeroVironment for a new line of defense against the cheap, proliferating drones reshaping the modern battlefield, in a contract valued at up to $500 million.
Announced around July 1, 2026, the award tasks AeroVironment with delivering commercial, layered counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS). A layered approach means stacking complementary sensors and effectors so that detection, tracking and defeat cover multiple ranges, altitudes and threat types rather than relying on a single line of defense.
The scope is deliberately broad. The systems are meant to counter everything from small hand-launched quadcopters to larger fixed-wing UAS, giving the Army an integrated capability from a single supplier. The $500 million figure is a ceiling, structured as a framework under which orders can be placed as requirements evolve.
Why it matters: recent conflicts have shown that inexpensive, numerous drones have become a defining threat on the battlefield. A drone costing a few thousand dollars can put multimillion-dollar platforms and personnel at risk, an asymmetry that has pushed cost-effective air defense to the top of military priorities.
AeroVironment is well known for its Switchblade family of loitering munitions and small unmanned systems. That dual experience, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the drone equation, aligns with the Army’s push for a consolidated, ready-to-field counter-UAS solution.
The demand is not confined to the United States. NATO forces and militaries worldwide are racing to acquire scalable defenses against drone swarms and one-way attack aircraft. The contract signals an accelerating shift toward adapting commercial technology for military needs, and marks a new benchmark for both procurement speed and battlefield deterrence.
