Top US General Confirms First Ukrainian F-16 Air-to-Air Kill Against a Russian Fighter

Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine has confirmed that a Ukrainian Air Force F-16 shot down a Russian fighter jet — the first air-to-air kill by the type against a crewed Russian combat aircraft. “Recently we had the first air-to-air kill where a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter,” Caine told a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, as reported by The War Zone on July 22.
Target assessed to be a Su-35S
Caine did not identify the aircraft type or the date of the engagement. Open-source data, however, aligns with the loss of a Russian Su-35S announced by Ukrainian military officials on July 8, 2026 — a loss that pro-Kremlin military bloggers also acknowledged. No official match between the two statements has been made, so engagement details should be treated with caution.
The Su-35S is regarded as one of the most capable fighters in Russian service, fielding a powerful radar and long-range R-77-1 and R-37M air-to-air missiles. That profile makes it a far more demanding opponent than the drones and cruise missiles Ukrainian F-16 pilots have hunted to date.
An expanding mission set
Ukraine’s F-16s have primarily flown air defense missions, downing more than 1,000 drones and cruise missiles. A confirmed kill against a crewed Russian fighter signals the fleet is now contesting air superiority as well. Ukrainian F-16s carry AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles; the weapon used in this engagement has not been disclosed, and officials shared no detail on launch range or conditions.
Why it matters
The milestone offers concrete evidence of the combat value of Western-supplied fighters. An F-16 defeating one of Russia’s most modern production fighters shows the training, tactics and weapons pipeline is delivering results — and provides NATO air forces flying the same F-16/AMRAAM combination a rare, current-war data point on how the package performs against a peer threat.
