The Name and the Concept

Kemankeş is an Ottoman Turkish term for a master archer — someone whose accuracy is the weapon, not the weapon itself. That precision ethic drives the system’s design: a 1,920×1,080 HD camera with 36× optical zoom and a 60°-to-2° adjustable field of view, all stabilized on a 2-axis gimbal. The AI guidance layer processes the imagery autonomously, identifies and classifies the target, and selects between electro-optical (EO) terminal guidance or GNSS depending on the electromagnetic environment.

Air-Launched Integration

KEMANKEŞ 1 is designed exclusively for air launch from Baykar’s UCAV family: TB2, TB3, and AKINCI. This integration is strategically significant. A TB2 operating at 16,000 feet can release KEMANKEŞ 1 at standoff distance, then egress while the missile prosecutes the target independently. The carrier platform never enters the adversary’s engagement envelope; KEMANKEŞ does the close work autonomously.

AI Guidance in Detail

The missile’s AI-assisted autopilot is not a simple GPS waypoint follower. It uses real-time optical scene matching to track moving targets, re-acquire targets that maneuver during the engagement, and discriminate between decoys and the actual target. In GNSS-contested or jammed environments, the EO terminal guidance mode maintains accuracy without relying on satellite navigation — a critical resilience feature in modern electronic warfare environments.

How It Changes TB2’s Combat Calculus

TB2 with MAM munitions must fly within the target’s visual range to employ its weapons effectively. TB2 with KEMANKEŞ 1 can strike from 100 km away — pushing it outside the engagement zones of most short-to-medium range air-defense systems. This dramatically extends the operational life of Turkey’s existing TB2 fleet without requiring platform replacement, and gives export customers a meaningful upgrade path for drones already in their inventory.
