JSM: The Only Anti-Ship Missile That Fits Inside an F-35
Show Article Summary

The Joint Strike Missile (JSM) is the only weapon cleared for carriage in the F-35A’s internal weapons bay that can engage both warships and high-value land targets at ranges exceeding 500 km. Built on the NSM’s combat system but redesigned to fit stealth geometry, JSM is Kongsberg’s answer to a question the F-35 programme itself created: how do you give a stealth fighter a long-range anti-ship capability without breaking its radar cross section?

Why F-35 Internal Bay Compatibility Is Rare

The F-35’s low-observable (stealth) capability depends on every weapon being carried internally. Most current anti-ship missiles — Harpoon, Exocet, RBS-15 — are too large for F-35 internal bays. JSM was engineered from the ground up to solve this: the NSM’s battle-proven seeker and warhead were packaged into a smaller body matched to F-35A geometry. No other qualified anti-ship missile fits the F-35A’s internal bay as of 2025.

FAQ

Is JSM the same as NSM?
JSM shares NSM’s IIR seeker and warhead technology but is a distinct weapon — smaller, with a new airframe for F-35 internal carriage, and with a longer range due to air launch altitude advantage.

Why can’t Turkey use JSM?
Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme in 2019 following the S-400 purchase. Without F-35, there is no platform for JSM.
